If you play the sequel to a roguelike game in the same way as the first roguelike game and find it in too like the original game, that's more of a you problem than the game's problem.
I like everything about Marathon except for the fact I'd have to buy it, but even if I had people to play it alongside, the chance that interest lasts beyond a year is vanishingly slim imo.
