Tezuka Osamu and American Comics - The Comics Journal Tezuka was a comic book artist, first and foremost, his dreams and later successes with animation notwithstanding. And as a comic book artist it would only make sense if comic books were his strongest...

The fact is that there is no competition- all art inspires. All art references other art- even when the author does not know it. Every large Anime Eye was once a sparkle in Donald Duck’s eye and vice versa.

But- interestingly- you could argue that “American Comic Art” was inspired by the Bandes Desinee that came before it - & even then you could argue those inspired the world of anime and manga too (See Hiyao Miyazaki & Moebius*2)
Who inspired who?

Tezuka (Astro Boy) was greatly inspired by Carl Barks & Floyd Gottfredson(*1)- two Americans. Manga & anime would not exist as it does now w/out Tezuka, & Tezuka’s style would not have come about w/out American Art. You could argue all of manga and anime is a reference to American Art

the problem is bigotry, but the tool they're using to spread it is *the concept of pornography*. as long as we accept the idea that "pornography" is

1. meaningfully distinct from other forms of art, and
2. inherently bad or shameful

it will continue to be a weapon conservatives can use against us!
