In your initial post you were saying you were confused about people talking about home-ownership as a primary investment vehicle, and how that felt weird. I'm actually agreeing with you and saying not only is it weird and socially harmful... it's factually wrong for a lot of people.
I think there's a dominant American narrative that owning the house you live in is a financial investment that will give someone security and build wealth. I think a lot of people feel like they have to buy a house (to live in) based on that idea.
Sorry, not trying to fight with you - just get worried about how pervasive that particular myth is. I agree that housing should be a right, rent is exploitative and all people should be able to own and control a decent living space. The current system sucks.
Oh not at all - there are totally reasons to buy a house. I was lucky to be able to buy one in 2021 because there were things I hadn't been able to do in a rental over the last decade (animals etc.). I'm just saying the whole investment narrative doesn't pan out for most ppl.
If you have enough money for a down-payment you'll generally get a better long term return investing it in an index fund and renting. Lots of studies have shown that outside of narrow circumstances homeownership is a pretty poor investment. But the myth is strong in our culture and narrative.
Owning a home is actually a pretty bad investment. The stock market historically outperforms home value appreciation, and that's before all the other opportunity costs, like making it very challenging to move cities for better work.

In case you're curious what your DA is doing instead of standing with the community who got viciously tear gassed by ICE this weekend:
1. Covered trial call for a photo op;
2. Prosecuting a misdo resist claim against an
ICE protester to run cover for the PPB cop who broke that protester's arm.
Extremely dissapointed... this feels like a minimum bar for accountability. Both now as these folks are cycling out of ICE, and in the after times.

Not in this case. The victims were alive when transported to the hospital in the last hour. Condition unkown at this time. PPD applied a turniquet to at least one victim according to their statement.
That's fair, I was just giving a extra push to my neighbors in District 2, especially those who might have voted for her.
I think it's important that she hear how bad of a look this is to her constituents, including the folks who liked her positioning herself as a "responsible, experienced, adult in the room".
I just wrote an email to PDX Council President Pirtle-Guiney asking her to be the "adult" in the room and step down as Council President.

And when I say that's her "brand" I mean it's how she talks about herself, how she campaigned, and the image she seems to want to project to the public and media.
I haven't followed city council enough to say if this is consistent with her actions as Council President.
Honestly it was quite bizzare to see Councilor Pirtle-Guiney (from my district) dig her heels in around retaining the Portland Council Presidency yesterday.
Her whole brand is as someone who can work with everyone and find compromise. It's so off-brand as to come off as wierd and even suspect.
