We invited the big 4 providers of specialist placements to debate the ethics of compulsory “specialist” inpatient treatment at last years BIGSPD conference. Not one replied.

The problem isn’t just poor practice in one place, it is a system that facilitates traumatised people being exported across the country to closed institutions where restrictive harmful practice flourishes

These patients will be moved to other “specialist” units around the country and will receive more care that is significantly different from what NICE recommend.

As over 200 patients are shipped out of St Andrews Hospital I want to thank Private Eye and Phil Hammond for shining light on the inadequacies of of private locked rehab placements and the fear in the nhs that drives their use.

Survivors of abuse were sent here to keep them safe.

What other locked rehab warehouse will they be sent to next?

We will not build effective community services while we spend £350,000 per person per year on endless admissions to inadequate “specialist” inpatient units.
