Sometimes, adaptation to one #antibiotics can make bacteria more vulnerable to other drugs. #CollateralSensitivity.
💡 By following the evolution of a β-lactamase, we uncovered how mutations can both create and mitigate such collateral sensitivity networks.

🚨PREPRINT🚨
Enzyme function does not rely only on static structure 🧩, but also on the rate at which functional sub-states interconvert ⏱️, making this interconversion subject to natural selection 🧬.

Living in the Arctic 🥶 means Christmas comes early 🎁🥳
10 MNOK (≈1 MUSD) Early Career Investigator grant from the Research Council of Norway to work with the fabulous @bunzela.bsky.social (Max Planck Institute) on uncovering the molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance.
#AMR #beta-lactamases
Interested in #β-lactamase inhibitors? 🧪
Our new #mSphere paper shows how a covalent boronic-acid + chelator fusion ⚗️ can restore β-lactam susceptibility in metallo-β-lactamase producers, even in variants that are difficult to inhibit with #taniborbactam.

Is it too early for a year review? 🤔
Research stays at ETH Zürich with Adrian Bunzel and at UBC Vancouver with Nobu 🤓.
Now I’m moving labs to start as Associate Professor at UiT, which means organising freezer contents 📦.
Two β-lactamase evolution preprints coming soon 🧬.
Stay tuned!
🔄 #Enzymes can adopt multiple #conformations.
⚡ Some of these act as functional sub-states.
📚 We summarised recent studies, the methods used to uncover these hidden states, and the challenges ahead in linking them to #proteinevolution.

Nature goes full open review!
I have complicated feelings about how and when this was achieved!
And they should be apparent to you after even a moment’s thought about the subtext here!

📣 Preprint Alert: How can evolution recruit existing enzymes during bacterial lifestyle changes?
Discover how mutations in a bifunctional enzyme 🔄 alter bacterial c-di-GMP metabolism, decoupling it from external polyamine signaling, and steering cells from a planktonic to a biofilm lifestyle 🦠

Are you interested in how #epistasis shapes the AMR evolution?
We showed that epistasis can be caused by independently modulating substrate binding and the chemical step ultimately changing the rate-limiting step in the catalytic cycle. @NatureCatalysis
