Mark your calendars for Tuesday, March 31st!
We are so excited to announce our March #literacies chat "Fostering Spaces of Liberation in Literacy Research" with special guest host Dr. Ryan Schey @ryanschey.bsky.social
My #literacies dream!
A6: Perhaps, a 'Victorious Future' is one wherein we, as individuals & collectives, remain committed to asking "Whose future? Who is benefitting? Who isn't? What needs to change to remedy this?" and continually refine the structures, systems, and practices that move society forward #literacies
A6: Thinking back to our opening question, I think a "Victorious Future" must necessarily be a co-constructed one, a future that, much like the good ole Fortnite gaming lobby, is made by a multitudinous mix of folks, all doing our own dances yet working toward the same #victory. #literacies
A5: My biggest suggestion? Look where the youth are gaming and follow them there! Almost a decade ago, I was teasing my high school students for their fascination with a new game called "Fortnite." Now, I play all the time. #literacies
A5: As a gamer infinitely engrossed in any and all character creation processes, I would be very interested in the #literacies and language practices to be explored specific to how students and gamers intentionally make and remake themselves at this preliminary stage π
Anne Haas Dyson, @haenyyoon.bsky.social and @brownellcassie.bsky.social are all scholars I also turn to explore that idea. Children make sense of, interpret, and rewrite their surroundings as they play. It could look like close ethnographic study of children's playful #literacies for example!
Sharing this article by @ujuanya.bsky.social and Esther Airemionkhale (tinyurl.com/AnyaAiremion...), which I know addresses multilingual education across Brazilian, Canadian, Colombian and US contexts through VR. #literacies
[Book Spoiler Alert] We actually tap into that engagement with gaming in Chapter 7, through Taty's account of being a #gamermom #literacies
Incredible! And, particularly in ever-increasing standardization of Western education, students having spaces to enact, shape and reshape linguistic and literate environments and frameworks is key! #literacies
I think one of the key elements here is the possibilities for language reinvention that happen in these "zero gravity" spaces! Gamers as second-language users mold the language in increasingly creative ways, for example. #literacies
Equally important here is how second-language English users in gaming spaces are not just "speaking" the language, but reclaiming it for themselves. #literacies
(2/2) If we want to foster educational spaces supporting authentic #literacies and linguistic engagements, ignoring the applications/spaces/communities that connect most to (and autonomously engage with) is just such a waste! It can reinforce notions of showing up to school as a separate other
(1/2) I can certainly try! For students that engage in gaming, especially in layered, online gaming spaces, many #literacies & linguistic elements are at play. Oftentimes, students attachments to/in these spaces create far more authentic, embodied engagements of themselves as literate individuals.
A3: While there are a plethora of reasons why this is important for #literacies consideration, I see how prominently we would be missing students' authentic literacy and language practices if we were to ignore these engagements
A2: 2/2 It helps me to be mindful and question myself, how often am I mindful of ensuring students have the opportunity to share their definitions of victory with me, to truly create a teaming environment toward their idealized selves #literacies
Right! In my case, it meant meeting my team halfway through. I wasn't imposing the methods, I was listening to my gamers and together we pieced it together! #literacies
A1. I think about how βvictoryβ can signify many different things depending on the context. Victory can suggest a binary between winners/losers in competitive gaming. Iβm curious how cooperative gaming methods might help redefine how βvictoryβ can look in learning environments. #literacies
A2: I see so many #literacies opportunities to consider gaming team strategies and languages! Lately, I have been thinking about the ways in which such structures and language open a new level of relationality, especially in considering elevating students' contributions and voices in #literacies
Well, since getting involved in DND in the last few years, that has skyrocketed on the list of favorites! But my all time favorite video game franchise is DragonAge :')
A1: Over the last few years, I have been working to intentionally reframe "victory" as focusing on being present in the moment as opposed to being fully focused on just trying to 'achieve' the next new thing, step, etc. #literacies
100% we all looked like this, haha! #literacies
As for games, I am a HUGE fan of all things games: board games, tabletop, video games, you know it! #literacies
