So happy Australia has been able to give you peace and space to think. I feel you deeply about finding balance and a future in translation, the way the industry is now. Always down to talk about it. Sending hugs down under πŸ’š

There is no ethical use of AI because the continued existence of the AI industry is directly harmful to (alongside everyone else) the interests of everyone whose labour makes books existβ€”writers of fiction & nonfiction, illustrators, translators, researchers, editors, everyone.

Hard no to this: French publisher Harlequin has told translators that their work will now be done by AI. They can β€˜revise’ AI translations at much lower rate. It’s a subsidiary of Harper Collins so treat this as a test for rollout elsewhere

AI Data Centers Are Sending Power Bills Soaring Wholesale electricity costs as much as 267% more than it did five years ago in areas near data centers. That’s being passed on to customers.

Bloomberg research found wholesale electricity up ~270% in areas near data centers

It doesn't seem like nearly enough people are taking it seriously

One A.I. image isn't too much energy, but 5 million videos? Per day/hour/minute whatever. It's not sustainable

Artists are losing work, wages, and hope as bosses and clients embrace AI Visual artists, illustrators and graphic designers share their stories about how AI is being used to lower wages, degrade work and even replace it altogether, in this installment of AI Killed My Job.

Freelance illustration gigs drying up. Ad agencies using Midjourney instead of hiring human artists. Costume design turned over to AI wholesale. Good work vanishing.

These are the stories of working visual artists, who describe losing jobs, wages, and hope as their clients and bosses embrace AI.

Jeremy Tiang really hits the nail on the head here (as would be expected).

Translation is caught between two forms of capitalist exploitation: using a per-word freelance structure to provide a bare minimum fee, and playing on its artistic nature to compel free ancillary labor alongside

4/4 🧡We should be painting these two men exactly as they are without resorting to misogyny or homophobia because when it comes down to it. The truth of who they are is monstrous enough & these attitudes about women & the LGBTQIA community are exactly why we are where we are right now.

🧡3/4Because these things are apparently hilarious, degrading or dehumanizing? Why do you think that? If you think it's funny to show putin & trump as gay or women, you really should sit with that for a moment.

🧡2/4...These 2 cis hetero men are currently doing everything they can to take away rights from women & the LGBTQIA+ community. And some people (mostly men I've noticed) are trying to mock them by depicting them as gay lovers or women.

Sharing memes of Trump and Putin kissing or engaged in any s*x act or dressed as women is not the huge own you think it is. It's actually deeply homophobic & rooted in misogyny 🧡
