How many women are in prison and on death row around the world? β in charts
How many women are in prison and on death row around the world? β in charts www.theguardian.com/global-devel...
Graph showing that in 2021, 15% of people in prison were 55+, a 5x increase from 1991.
Older people now make up 5x as much of the prison population as they did 3 decades ago.
Turning prisons into βmakeshift nursing homesβ is one of the nationβs most wasteful, morally bankrupt experiments to date.
Screenshot of text: "I think I'm dying," the 26-year-old father pleaded through the door. Surveillance camera footage shows the jail nurse sauntered over to his cell, clearly exasperated. "There ain't a damn thing f----- wrong with you," she snapped, before slamming the door shut. A nearby inmate cracked a joke about the "boy who cried wolf." By the time paramedics arrived hours later, Ellis was barely conscious. He died that day from septic shock brought on by pneumonia - an infection he could have survived, if treated earlier.
Behind bars, Terral Ellis Jr. pleaded for help. Then, a nurse told him there wasnβt a βdamn thingβ wrong with him. Hours later, he was dead.
Going to jail shouldn't be a death sentence, yet the carceral healthcare system is killing people.
Ahead of the 2020 election, we asked people in prison what might have helped keep them from committing the crime that led to their incarceration.
Among their responses were:
β’ affordable housing
β’ a stable, well-paying job
β’ mental health support

Migrants locked up alone for 38 consecutive days on average: ICE increasingly uses isolation as punishment
The agency maintains that it does not use this method... but it does hold people in βadministrative segregation,β a euphemism for solitary confinement

Bill S-205 (Tonaβs Law) represents a concrete step toward the long promised reform β to end solitary confinement, protect human rights and implement effective oversight of corrections.
Honouring Ashleyβs legacy means taking action to end the injustices and inhumanity that continue. 2/2

A man being held at Rikers died last night - the second death at the jail in a week, and the 12th this year.
The cycle of death at Rikers is well-documented, horrifying, and unacceptable. We must close Rikers for good.
ICE wants more detention space and itβs faster to re-open old facilities to hold immigrants than to build new ones. Enter: ZOMBIE PRISONS

U.S. map showing that in 25 states and D.C., federal agencies like ICE and the U.S. Marshals only detain people using local jails. In other states, jails play a part in the detention network alongside federal or private facilities. In Arizona, Delaware, and Hawaii no local jails provide substantial detention space to these agencies.
Thousands of people detained by ICE are actually held in local, publicly operated jails
These facilitiesβrun by elected sheriffsβare making money off of the incarceration of people who are mostly accused of no more serious offense than crossing the border without permission
For men awaiting execution on Texasβ death row, Dungeons & Dragons became a lifeline β an escape from extreme isolating conditions, leading to the sort of friendships solitary confinement usually prevents.

I'm urging a court to order the federal government to follow the law and end its inhumane conditions for immigrants detained at 26 Federal Plaza.
No one should be held in horrendous conditions for days on end β it is illegal and it must stop.
