A quilled Velociraptor with tightly folded arms stands atop a pile of loose stones, backed by an intensive purple and orange sunset.
A leathery-winged, white-furred Dimorphodon with red legs soars above rough waves. In the distance, jutting stones pierce a sulphurous sky.
A red-headed Albertosaurus moves alongside a herd of Lambeosaurus, splashing through a shallow woodland stream. The sky is a smoky blue with wisps of clouds strewn about. The massive form of a colossal asteroid hovers menacingly above it all.
An emaciated Triceratops with ragged skin sits in a low squat, shown in stark white against an almost entirely black composition. A cutaway view shows a tangle of roots piercing deep into the ground, a visual representation of the sickness penetrating the dinosaurs body.
I donβt think I love anything as much as the surreal, alien palaeoart of the 70s into the early 90s. These compositions are all naturalistic, but theyβre strange and hypernatural in a way that transcends realism. Itβs a bizarre but profoundly moving approach to reconstructing the past.

happy mario day! this is yoshi, though he might look a little different from how you remember him π± yoshi was a metailurin sabre-toothed cat that lived in late miocene eurasia, and its cursorial adaptations were well-suited to open habitats

Boomerang made from mammoth tusk with 5 cm scale
A boomerang made from mammoth ivory, from ObΕazowa Cave, Poland. Dating to around 40,000 years ago, the object was shaped and well-used, with signs of polish in the areas where a right-handed person would have handled and thrown it.

A robustly built Carcharodontosaurus stands on a white background, posed in a relaxed stance that shows off its muscular body and clawed hands. It has a three-toned countershaded pattern, black on top, grey-blue in the middle, and a cream underside. The crests above its eyes blue, and its eye is a piercing red.
An Argentinosaurus with an alert posture strides across a white background. It has a long, whip-like tail that ends in black and white bands. Its head is held high, adorned with a similar pattern as the tail. The rest of its muscular body is patterned with terracotta browns decorated with yellow streaks and black spots.
Here's a sneak preview of the upcoming Jurassic World Institute Dinopedia artwork article, to give you an idea of just how high-quality the images I've received are. This is Carcharodontosaurus and Argentinosaurus, two of the dozens of animals Timothy Bradley illustrated for the JP Institute site!

art depicting megapterygius swimming just below the ocean surface
a photograph of the megapterygius holotype as it was displayed at the national museum of nature and science in tokyo
happy #fossilfriday! bonus: this is megapterygius, a mosasaur from late cretaceous japan. at least 5 of its posterior dorsal vertebrae have neural spines that project anterodorsally, suggesting that it may have had a dorsal fin reminiscent of some delphinoid cetaceans

A photo of a spectacled bear approaching the viewer. The animal is stocky with black fur. Its face is marked with gold, the pattern of which somewhat resembles a pair of spectacles.
Meet the spectacled bear! Also known as the Andean bear, itβs distinguished by the glasses-shaped marking on its face. An inhabitant of the tropical Andes, itβs currently the only extant bear species in South America.

Boar taxiderm model, and piglet, in NHM London.
Italian boar statue at Ashmolean in Oxford, flipped for comparison.
I've never paid much attention to the European wild boar included in the artiodactyl display but today it occurred to me that its pose _might_ be based on that of the famous Italian statue shown here, first written about in the 1550s, stolen and taken to Oxford, and cast many times in bronze...

I've written at length about the Blue whale model, the very first of its kind and built to accompany the Irish skeleton from 1891 now known as Hope. So I'll avoid talking about it again... there's tons to say. It was constructed by Percy and Stuart Stammwitz in 1937 and 38...
