Our three students who were taken by ICE were doing everything right. They had declared themselves to immigration judges, attended court on their assigned dates, and were following the legal process. They are not criminals. They have no ties to any criminal activity. They are loved in their classrooms. Their family has worked at the nearby "Old McDonald's" petting zoo and dairy farm for 15 years. They lived in a house on the same road as a home ICE had a warrant for. The fact that ICE went door to door is unfathomable. The fact that our students were handcuffed and put into the same van as the alleged criminal from down the street is unconscionable. When I think of my third grader's experience, my stomach twists and it is hard to breathe. We are in shock-and it is that shared shock that has unified our community in the call for our students' release. We are in direct communication with our students. Let me be clear: they are not "being medically evaluated." They are not being "questioned as potential victims." Calling a detention center by another name does not change what it is. We deserve better than spin and misinformation. My teachers and my students are already hurting. Please, think about how long every hour feels for a third grader in a detention center. Same, it really speaks to my anxieties about moving bits around - working in a 'plan' document as opposed to the manuscript makes so much sense.

I thought I was going to hate this book but it's really great. I basically copied it all into a notebook before returning it to the library.

7.20.16 Idon’t quite know what this new book is, who these people might be, or where it’s going, but I imagine it might also be true that, if I knew, I’d be too bored to keep going. So I hope, and I hack through thick leaves. I began Exhibit in 2014, and, until 2017, worked on it when I wasn’t editing my first novel. Starting in 2017, my fiction-writing time went to just Exhibit. 11.17.16 Last week’s election left us brokenhearted and afraid. I keep forcing myself to take deep inhales. It helps a little. What will become of us? I want to be a better person; I would like to be less selfish. I’ve made resolutions about how I’ll use my time. Will they keep? Will I grow up at last? 4.10.17 Each month that goes past, since the elections: flicker of surprise, we’re not yet all dead. Last night, I finished typing out notes for the second novel. I think I’m starting to see where it’s going, what it hopes to be.
