Title page of the book “Jane Austen’s Bookshelf” by Rebecca Romney - a copy from the University of Waterloo, Ontario as evidenced by the embossed ex libris on the upper right.
Gotta love University libraries and the circulation of books between them 🥰 @mcmasteruniversity.bsky.social

Amid measles outbreak in Ontario, RFK Jr.'s advice has Canadian experts alarmed
America's new top health official said the measles vaccine "causes deaths every year" and "all the illnesses measles itself causes."
More on measles misinformation with me, Mansour Haeryfar - @westernu.bsky.social l - & Dr. Brian Ward - @cusm-muhc.bsky.social in the @nationalpost.bsky.social . Measles kills or damages perfectly healthy people and no amount of healthy eating can prevent it.

A closer look
The different pigment levels seen when growing retinal pigment epithelial cells in the laboratory are not linked to differences in gene expression.
There are cells in our retinas that produce pigments to absorb excess light. Scientists are trying to understand what controls the number of pigments as this could help inform stem cell therapies. elifesciences.org/digests/9251...

But I would like to know, in a host immunology perspective, would there be any downside in keeping the Yamagata strain?

So. Drawbacks?
Higher cost means lower access for sure.
Here is another potential drawback: according to Pr K. Subbarao, cultivating the virus for vaccination, would present a very slim but real risk of reintroducing this extinct strain in the environment.

Now, apart from the cost, what are the drawbacks of immunizing people against something that has vanished?
First, has it vanished forever?

That’s interesting. The Yamagata flu strain had not been detected since 2020, probably thanks to Covid related changes in behaviour.
