Smart policy can help industrial electrification pencil out, and states can lead the way. Upfront incentives and lower operating costs can get clean heat into more facilities across the country.
In states like NY, PA, and WA, clean heat may already be cost-competitive in some subsectors. Industries like plastics & resins, pulp & paper, and ethanol stand out as early opportunities.
But where can industrial electrification actually work—technically and economically? We use engineering archetypes to pinpoint the best opportunities and test how different policies could accelerate adoption of clean heat technologies.

Next-generation geothermal systems can access geothermal heat virtually anywhere, dramatically expanding the range of locations where geothermal is viable. There are two types of next-generation systems: Enhanced Geothermal Systems and Advanced Geothermal Systems.
Geothermal energy can directly provide heat for industrial processes by heating water, generating steam, and heating air. Most geothermal systems use a heat exchanger to transfer heat from the geothermal fluid to the facility.
