Late to the party but Black Mirror is kinda good, isn't it?
God I love black and white movies.
This post is brought to you by the I've just watched La Haine for the first time gang
I watched Stans last Friday and while it's an entertaining view into the titular phenomenon and the influence that art can have for a wide range of different people, it just wasn't made for the big screen. Underutilises the possibilities of cinema both for big impact and personal intimacy.
Nice, I only got the half of the first chapter at hand. Might actually be worth to look into if I can grab a cheap used copy somewhere.
Haha I had a similar reaction when I got that notification. That specific book informed a lot of how I approached media theories during my cultural studies bachelor.
Also also wanna add that this is just me thinking out loud. Recently had an interesting discussion with a friend about the terms Elf / Elb / Fee / Fairy and all that, which got kinda muddled at first because of subjective differences (valid but confusing :D)
But I also want to say it's a useful descriptor to give people an idea what you're talking about in the broadest sense. From what I've seen the term has evolved organically (pls correct me if I'm wrong) so people kinda know what it means. Difference being "it's a cozy game" vs. "it's my cozy game".
Agree because cozy game for me means a game that I can hop into without "preparation", either because it's easy enough or I have played enough of it so I don't have to refresh mechanics, lore etc. (E.g. Binding of Isaac is one such game for me)
Anyways, since the beginning of this year I've been slowly getting into Warhammer, which feels so weird to me because of this preamble. That is all.
For the last 3ish years or so I've been thinking of violence (broad term) in media (mostly games) and its aesthetics, history and ramifications (if there are any?). I think, while we should be steadfast against reactionary and / or conservative hyperbolics, it's still something to talk about.
This is how, you remind me...
How do you (if at all) tackle the question of fun / enjoyment when it comes to analysing a game? Is it important to your specific area? I often feel like I can't connect the scientific view with the popular lens, it's not strictly necessary but I think sometimes it could be beneficial.
Either a funny bit or even worse
I know we're supposed to write a little more sober, but "the popular fps Half-Life" sounds... very dry.
Holy when did Twitch activate email notifications for channels going live? The spam....
I don't own a Switch 2 but I feel vindicated with how the cow is one of its viral parts. Moo Moo Meadows always was my favourite track in 8 because I loved just seeing them chill around the course. Now "La Vaca" lives in my head.

I've got my eye on Relooted, an afro-futurist themed heist game where you plan to steal back real African artifacts from Western Museums, and escape with parkour based abilities. Honestly there's not a single word in this that I didn't like.

The movie lacked the grandeur that I usually associate with Middle-earth, but I think that was a good thing in this case. It didn't try to be more then a relatively self-contained story.
A week before Christmas I watched War of the Rohirrim together with a friend. A few fan service in there, but a well paced storyline, beautiful music and some breathtaking shots made me feel right at home, even against the sometimes rough animation.
Nosferatu clearly feels like a love letter to the original that doesn't quite stick the landing. Doesn't mean it's bad or even just good, but I wasn't as awed as after watching The Lighthouse.
But I also kinda want to bring my ME1 Character along (and get that sweet achievement). Well, the decision can wait for a bit. Right now it's Tower Defense time with Go Home Dinosaurs :D Palate cleanser in the best kind of way.
I replayed 2 during Christmas / New Years 2023/24. So it's still fresh. I'm motivated to play 3, especially because my playthrough of 2 during that time was under the guise of analysing its depiction of AI and adjacent topics, and I want to continue that now.
Rough start to the year, but I think I'm in 2025 now. I also finished Mass Effect 1 a couple of days ago. Remembered very little from when I first played it. So now the question is: Play 3 (for the first time) or 2 with the same character?
I haven't played other Thief games or Dishonored (yet) so maybe that all us better executed there, but in a vacuum it is very enjoyable.
The few different systems to get on thieving worked well together, sometimes the reward felt a little lacklustre. Combat is weakest part, but then again, it is mainly a game about being stealthy. And the level design of the missions supports that.
For me the game shines especially in its quiet moments, when I can just exist in Garret's surroundings. I wish the game would have done more with that, but through the City Jobs there was still a lot of simply moving through the hub world without it being overly important.
So I finished Thief (2014) and after gathering some thoughts, I definitely understand many of the criticisms thrown its way. But I ended up liking it.
