A red squirrel with a stripey tail running along the side of a large tree in sunshine.
A red squirrel in a wooden feeder box attached to a tree. Its long tail is hanging down from the box. The tail is striped with dark reddish bands and light ginger bands.
We’ve been sent these fantastic images of a red squirrel mid-moult, which in this individual has given a beautiful stripey-tail effect! The lighter stripes are new fur coming in. These photos were taken by one our volunteers, Robyn, in Callander.

A red squirrel on the ground in thick snow, with a small clump of snow on its head.
We hope you’ve all being enjoying the recent snow as much as this wee cutie! Red squirrels are well-adapted to winter life, growing thicker coats and fluffier ears, and spending more time in their dreys. The food caching they did in autumn comes in handy too!
