Something I haven’t seen anyone mention; the FrLg ports programmed the L=A button mode to remap the D-Pad directions to Start, Select, B, and A from the top counterclockwise with the joystick handling movement, basically made it a true one-handed mode

Anyway I guess this is my review of Pokemon Yellow version lmao
The very first pokemon games are about how Pokemon are the coolest collectible toy on earth and now YOU 🫵 get to play with them too, and I think thats a neat aspect of the narrative structure that gets overlooked by both imitators and the franchise itself unfortunately often
*In universe* pokemon is a franchise so incredibly profitable that the fucking Yakuza is scalping the rare ones via a front business and shaking down the CEOs of popular accessory manufacturers to get a cut of their profits
And all of that is contained within the fiction of the games themselves and used for the narrative
Cubone isnt a species of universally dead mothers and orphaned crying children; he is a collectible monster with a written backstory that there just happens to be a million of in circulation
They arent presented as animals fufilling ecological niches, theyre mass produced characters with identical back stories and later rare collectible variants that serve as foundations for you to build on once youve popped them out of that capsule
Within the first game outing Pokemon as creatures are, themselves, a fiction that every character within has bought into, as much a mania as would occur in real life
theyre finding, buying, collecting, trading and battling toys with all the trappings of real life plastic Gachapon capsule toys
Something I think a lot of “Pokemon Killer” clones miss in their attempt to replicate the forest from its trees is that Pokemon Red and Blue, and to a lesser extent Gold and Silver, are designed as games as if they are games based on toys that already existed
