As someone who is often spandex-clad I actually think I have a serious responsibility to shout down these kinds of people whenever I encounter them. We need to police our own.

The eternal neighborhood conversation
I did this on our only trip to Amsterdam with a rented Urban Arrow. We rented the wrong type by accident so we had the shop owners personal bike.
Left it overnight with the key in the lock. Felt many emotions when I went back out in the morning!
In parallel China is scaling up all sorts of EV solutions from bikes to scooters to cars and trucks. Weβre falling so behind.
It costs me grappling with the fear of emailing someone I don't know with zero context which is not $0 but it is quite cheap.
I would love to get access to data on vacancies and sales tax revenue on the two pedestrianized blocks in Downtown San Mateo vs. the rest of downtown.
Iβm guessing it would tell a similar story. Anyone have ideas on how to get that data?
A picture of a book with a red cover titled βHow to Attract Birdsβ
This book has found me at just the right time (in my 40s and realizing I should take birds more seriously)
Sometimes I wonder why the people that think developers can just print free money from cities don't become developers. I would love a free city-powered money printing machine!
The War on Cars has made an appearance in the comments!
FYI: @thewaroncars.bsky.social
This person is going to be so pissed when they hear about AB 2097!

(I should really not be spending time on Nextdoor threads about housing at my local Safeway)
Those look like scooter-sized wheels. Interesting setup!
This is a great example of all the different users of safe infrastructure.
Our local PD insist that riding on the sidewalk in San Mateo is illegal despite a clear law stating otherwise. It causes so much confusion.
Reading through these examples I'm realizing it could be much worse!
Fun fact: My proposed headline for this one was "The Road Safety Metric That Needs to Die."
I'm really, really tired of traffic engineers sealioning about US crash deaths being (slightly) less horrific if you divide them by VMT instead of population.
This is more interesting than I originally realized. Long Beach is part of the original state pilot but that excluded PCH. This add on bill would allow the inclusion of PCH.
Long Beach is getting serious about speed cameras!
Some good coverage of the frustrations of working with any city on traffic safety.
So many solutions are dependent on crashes rather than proactively making things safe. I'm also impressed that Long Beach provides "20 is plenty" signs for free!

This is beautifully written. Thanks for sharing it. May Kyleβs memory be a blessing.
"I have always said that it was the suburbs that killed him. It was the systemically violent and hostile way that we design our cities that killed him. It was the egotistical and patriarchal culture of entitlement to The Road that killed him."
Youβre right. My first read totally missed that. Need to get ready to show up to planning commission to demand bike racks!
Explore your local percentage here: parkingreform.org/resources/pa...
I guess I can stop hoping they will finally add bike racks at this Safeway. I will miss this grocery store if this all goes to plan. Wish they could keep the Safeway and put housing on top!
Over 50% of trips in San Mateo are less than 3 miles! Get an e-bike and save some money folks.
Just gave my kids a sales pitch about visiting here at dinner tonight. Looks beautiful!
Solar is great but putting it over parking lots does make it much harder to replace that parking lot with much more useful infill housing where appropriate.
In places big parking lots are needed we should definitely cover them with solar but in cities we should cover them with housing instead.
What's your sign?
I think theyβre designed to get selected by a design committee not to actually be a place to store a bike.
Caltrain does have great bike lockers at all their stations. I think utilizing those could be an option if it was a peak time.
Itβs a bummer a parent canβt go on a weekend trip with their kids now because of the ~4 peak commute trains that fill up.
This feels so far away for the areas around Caltrain stations. I hope we get there but they need to figure out something better in the interim.
They do have great BikeLink lockers at stations but then youβre stuck without a bike on the other end.
Bluesky post from Assemblymember Bauer-Kahan: 1) E-bikes are a fun and eco-friendly way to get around, but higher-speed riders arenβt always following the rulesβand that can put everyone at risk. Since 2023, there have been nearly twice as many e-bike fatalities as regular bike fatalities, even with fewer overall injuries.
Maddening to see such obfuscation from the author of a bill that will criminalize people biking while doing nothing to address unsafe driving.
The cause of the vast majority of deaths while biking or e-biking is drivers in CARS. If the Assemblymember truly cared about safety, sheβd regulate cars.
This is what everyone in CA should be telling their state reps or city council if they come up with some whacky e-bike safety proposal.
