UK Society of Authors launches logo to identify books written by humans not AI
Tracy Chevalier announces registration scheme at the London Book Fair as AI works flood market
Sadly, this is absolutely necessary and I welcome it for at least 2 reasons: Books are personal, about sharing experience & exploring ideas - if you’ve read my books, you’ve met me. And a human author is *accountable* for what they/we write: we take responsibility & influences/money are traceable.

Charlotte is so brave here.
As I said earlier: it's very upsetting as a rape survivor to see my suffering weaponised to justify these authoritarian measures. Measures which won't do anything to end sexual violence, but risk great injustice – mostly to cut costs.

Along with hiring graphic designers and illustrators (it's fire sale prices) there are many tools to help you provide your own illustrations for scientific graphics. I'll drop a few here in 🧵 #ScienceSky 🧪
You can find illustrators via the many many amazing posts of #SciArt feed.

Yeah. She’s my MP. Yay. I think she’s trying to toe the party line and not piss off any of her constituents (inc the Jewish, Iranian/Persian and other communities) and what’s coming out is this abomination plus her vile comments re the murdered school girls. Just awful

Photo of a cuneiform tablet fragment shaped a bit like an irregular diamond. It preserves nearly 20 incomplete lines of text separated by a horizontal ruling
There's a broken cuneiform tablet from the Old Babylonian period, nearly 4,000 years ago, which preserves a tiny portion of a dialogue between two friends.
It feels a bit like the conversations I've been having for the past week, so I wanted to share it.

What a lovely shot of a magpie, very different and captures the quirkiness of maggies. Love it!

My daughter wrote about this in 2024 for a science writing comp with the Association of British Science Writers and the RI. She was a runner up. Waiting for them to post the essays from the three winners on the site (yeah, two years on). But shocking what she found out :(

Agree and it was pretty sizeable as well. What I’ll see usually is a group with both common and BHG, with the odd herring standing out 🤣

Fab, thanks for the confirmation. We get a number of different species here, mainly Common and BHGs.

A photograph of a gull. I shot this as the gull flew over me, its white and mottled brown feathers contrast against the light blue sky. Its wings are outstretched as it flies over.
Juvenile gull (Herring maybe) against a blue sky. In London. We do get the occasional weird sky colour

A lovely Roman mosaic showing floral motifs surrounded by a twisted guilloche border. Oh! And there's a fish! The colour scheme is white, black, grey and red.
This is where it started everyone!
Our "Floral Mosaic" was discovered in 1960 (don't ask how 😬😱). This led to 8 years of excavation during which the Palace was gradually revealed.

Today’s themes are side profiles and robins. I’m reposting this robin from last week because he fits both themes :))

Theme is photogenic birds - what we find to be photogenic. But aren’t all birds photogenic? I mean, when they actually let us photograph them? Here’s a wren I posted before from the other day. A cutie, if a bit ruffled. Was pleased to finally get a shot of one :)

I am also shocked by the lack of coverage of this fire. It’s so far only affecting the Union Street buildings, but one of those has partially collapsed, from what I can tell backwards into the station. And it’s not yet contained. This is major and more than halfway down BBC’s homepage.

8 digital drawings of birds. a heron, oyster catcher, rock pipit, ,stonechat, blue tit, robin, mute swan and kingfisher. the quality of the drawings gets better as they go along.
To all the AI folks that whine that making art is inaccessible. I drew all these with my finger, on a phone, with an app that cost £6.99.
I drew all these in a month and you can see that I learnt as I went along. I am disabled and holding a stylus or pencil hurts, so I found a way that works for me.
