As @mariachait.bsky.social notes: “There are things you can do both when you’re young and when you’re older, to prevent serious hearing loss. We’re hoping this collaboration with the LSO will also be a channel to start this conversation so we can improve the quality of life for people."
According to Professor Chait, hearing loss is the strongest modifiable risk factor for dementia and protecting your hearing early can reduce long-term health consequences.
And while hearing aids help with speech perception, they don’t fully restore music enjoyment.
The UCL team adapted research-grade software to extract music-specific brain responses – translating neuroscience into something designers could work with for the LSO’s 24/25 & 25/26 campaigns.

Commissioned by Design Bridge, the @ucl.ac.uk Ear Institute team used EEG (64 sensors), heart rate & skin conductance to capture brain and body responses to Holst in 2024/2025 & Tchaikovsky's Symphony No.4 for 2025/2026.
The LSO and their creative agency, Design Bridge & Partners, wanted their seasons programme artwork to go beyond engaging visuals – instead looking to create something rooted in science that authentically reflected the audience experience of listening to their performances.
What happens in the brain when we hear symphonies? And how can that data be shaped to form art & design? A recent consultancy between @uclbrainscience.bsky.social researchers & @londonsymphony.bsky.social explored just that.
