Icecream: High-Fidelity Equivariant Cryo-Electron Tomography
Cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) visualizes 3D cellular architecture in near-native states. Recent deep-learning methods (CryoCARE, IsoNet, DeepDeWedge, CryoLithe) improve denoising and artifact cor...
Our colleagues Vinith Kishore and Valentin Debarnot from the @ivandokmanic.bsky.social lab have come up with an amazing deep learning tool for denoising and filling the missing wedge in #cryoET data. I'm pleased to introduce Icecream🍧

Hey #TeamTomo …would you like to try some 🍦ICECREAM!? Our @unibas.ch colleagues over at the @ivandokmanic.bsky.social lab have developed a stunningly effective tool to de-noise and de-wedge your tomograms. The contrast and details will give you brain freeze! 🍨❄️🤯
Please try, we need feedback 🧪🧶🧬🔬

✨Excited that the main project of my PhD is now available as a pre-print on #bioRxiv
Here, we used #CryoET to visualise mitochondrial proteostatic stress and together with SPA #CryoEM shed light into the functional cycle of the Hsp60:10 chaperone system. #TeamTomo

Out today in @nature.com: Together with the Honigmann, Shevchenko, Drobot and Hof labs, we present a general workflow for imaging the localization and transport of individual lipids in cells and mapping their metabolism.

For #teamtomo, context is everything.
We highlight the power of #surfacemorphometrics in guiding STA and quantitatively assessing the impact of these structures on the local environment.
1st collab paper w/ @zidlab.bsky.social (hopefully many more to come!)

Subtomogram Averaging of a mitochondrially co-translating ribosome
Happy to share that the final version of record for our (
@nanigrotjahn.bsky.social) #teamtomo mitochondrial cotranslation story is online at @jcb.org! We combined STA with surface morphometrics to learn how ribosomes bind to and alter mitochondrial membranes in yeast.

Remembering Professor Béla Novák 1956 - 2025
With great sadness, we announce the loss of Professor Béla Novák.
Still hard to believe but Béla Novák died suddenly on Saturday.
We've lost a fantastic colleague, mentor & great friend to many. There was really no-one else like him. Working with him was so much fun & I owe him a lot. All my thoughts are with his family.

Today Jan Drenth would have been 100 years, but sadly he passed away last week.
He was the founding father of structural biology in the Netherlands and his modesty, his gentle humor and his generosity set the spirit for the amazing environment in Groningen where i did my PhD.

Improvements in LM (top) and EM (bottom) of our micro-sam model (finetuned) compared to the default SAM model.
After a long journey, Segment Anything for Microscopy is now published in Nature Methods! We significantly improve SAM for interactive and automatic segmentation in light and electron microscopy and build a user-friendly tool.

Two images from the PubPeer thread at https://pubpeer.com/publications/F7C42C356B2E7049FDB68A434EF4F8.
They both show fluorescent microscopy photos with a black background, and cellular structures in fluorescent green, red, and blue. Pubpeer users (including myself) have marked these panels with colored rectangles, to highlight repetitive features, suggesting photos were digitally altered.
Retraction of a paper from the lab of a Stanford Nobel Prize winner.
The PI dismissed our combined concerns as 'micro-duplications that are typical image processing artifacts'.
But after consulting with an 'image analysis expert', the authors retracted the paper.

Funding overhaul threatens historic U.K. research units
Scientists protest new “challenge-led” grants replacing funding that supported long-term basic research
Double whammy: Wellcome Centres are no more & MRC Units are on their last funding cycle. Huge blow to science in cities other than Cambridge-Oxford-London which continue to have well-funded institutes with excellent infrastructure (Crick, LMB etc). The rest of us…?
