If the Boat Race had not been televised for the last 88 years, no-one would think it particularly important to put it on TV now.

As Nick Clegg’s in the spotlight again, here’s a short thread of the time I took his bizarre 2020 Politico photo shoot and turned them into Edinburgh posters. 1/4

Unfortunately, it was kept in the back of a vape shop next to Glasgow Central Station

I read the piece again and became even more disappointed.

2026: "Docter said Pixar found some parents didn’t want entertainment to force them to have a conversation they weren’t ready for with their children. β€œWe’re making a movie, not hundreds of millions of dollars of therapy,” he said."

2009:

Things look grim in the markets right now, but at least the U.S. economy wasn’t already being propped up by a massive speculative AI bubble that is highly sensitive to rising energy costs.

I think this is right a lot more broadly as well. We spend a lot of time ascribing corrupt motives to politicans out of a failure of imagination - because we can't imagine they actually think X is a good idea, when they do

Same applies to Mahmood on immigration or Putin and Ukraine. They believe it

BBC going with bitter sarcasm for their main headline this morning.

"Huge fire engulfs Kuwait City tower as Trump accuses Starmer of seeking to 'join wars after we've already won'"

Fact. The screwdriver that tightens the arms of spectacles is only available inside Christmas crackers. Opticians have to pull dozens of crackers to get the tools of their trade, and if you look out the back at Specsavers, you’ll find bins full of wire puzzles, hair bobbles and fortune telling fish.

I remember learning about the Hays Code in film school and how it made it so that any amoral protagonist had to meet karmic justice by the end of the film and going β€œwow, that’s really silly” and then once a week I log online and see people argue that we need stuff like that now or it’s problematic

Breaking: Anthropic CEO says Claude may or may not have gained consciousness, as the model has started a letterboxd account. Skeptics point out it has been mostly logging TV shows.

Just because you lack the (frankly quite basic) media literacy needed to understand a work of art does not make that work of art a failure

When I was a reader, I didn't keep stats on CONSIDERS vs PASS. I DO remember that if I had two CONSIDERS a week, that was a rare week.

And we're talking about submissions to agencies and production companies. Even at the pro level, you're passing on significantly more than you are moving up.

Combining the British people’s love and respect for Kemi Badenoch with their enthusiasm about Donald Trump and his Iran war: no party is doing it like them right now

Specificity in a character makes them feel real and grounded, which then makes their emotional arc ALSO feel real and grounded, and thus... relatable. Additionally, it reinforces that so much of what we feel, what we struggle with, find purpose in, is universal.
