There are many people that cannot handle one person disagreeing with them about which drawer the utensils go in just wondering out online and doing the equivalent of standing on a table in a bar shouting their political opinions because they view social media as a personal blog.

I think a fundamental truth about social media that really needs to be more centralized when it comes to understanding people's behavior online is that most people's caveman brains cannot differentiate a handful of people yelling at them online from their village/tribe forming a mob against them.

I think it's very common among even racists that admit that they're racist to treat specific individuals of the race they normally hate like individuals. "One of the good ones" is a very common trope. As someone that grew up around racist as fuck people in north Georgia, this isn't that unique.
