Much of what these kids created was truly mind-blowing. Although we weren't prepared this deluge, I'm thankful that we could contribute as much as we did! Because now, THOUSANDS of kids have increased their awareness, appreciation and knowledge of archaeology. And that is HUGE. πΊ
Both my gpas had the same name. One was a CCC tree planter, then worked for Standard Oil. The other died while on his rural newspaper delivery job in the 60s. To avoid a cow in the road, he slammed on his brakes with his wooden leg, which caused his head to slam the car roof. Absolutely brutal.
This is so exciting! My immense thanks and gratitude to this army of public archaeologists for contributing their time, expertise, and experience to help make this book happen! We can only improve public archaeology by learning from and collaborating with each other π«ΆπΊ #pubarch
A black cat laying on a southwestern style woven blanket, next to a beige desk mat that is partially wet with spilled water
Just did a virtual guest lecture to an undergrad Public Archaeology class in Illinois and this bozo of course launched onto my desk and knocked over a can of sparkling water, right in the middle of everything. This is part of his handiwork, I just left the puddle until I finished the talk π
Got an email from an ECR that's lifting me up just as I need it most! The youths are making me hopeful for #pubarch "I was able to finish your public archaeology book over the weekend and I really loved it. It helped me narrow down what it is I would like to do with my career." tinyurl.com/4dwfmt2b
I see no lies here

It's a pretty fantastic story that began with someone illegally hunting in private creeks and resulted in a huge rural, community initiative!

Many thanks to Bernard Means of VCU for his guidance on prepping! Sanding, sanding, sanding, spackling, sanding some more, and painting a base coat.
At least I'm able to work on a creative project. I'm replicating mastodon teeth and tusks on 3D prints to gift to the landowner as a thank you for donating everything to a small, rural museum. My grit is 2 different kinds of sugar! πΊ
I have an urge to make enchiladas this weekend ππ
NOOO!!
At a book signing, David Sedaris looked at me for a nano-second before I even spoke and went, "Gemini, huh?" Then he dug into his tote and found a hotel mini lotion to gift me, because my birthday had just passed.
I lost or let go of all my UMN gear long ago, but I have a big oversized sweatshirt that I gifted my dad in the 90s that I was saving for a craft, and I'm gonna dig it out tomorrow and start rocking it.
Minneapolis truly is one of the best cities.
For students from any state/any institution studying Iowa history or archaeology - this is a low effort application with a HIGH rate of success! You can even use some of it for conference travel! πΊ
The Society for American Archaeology has had several sessions on this over the years. Here are abstracts from a big session in 2019. I'm sure some of these people have published on it - I know I've seen stuff too! core.tdar.org/collection/6...
A black and white poodle laying on his back with his legs all up in the air sleeping on a couch surrounded by blankets
My dog, who's afraid of fireworks, has been sleepy soundly through 2 hours of jackhammering and house shaking after the neighbor's water main burst due to the extreme cold. This day is nuts.
Same π€£ I put a coat on mine, he stood on the deck for 5 seconds before turning around and noped it. But now all is fair game since I shoveled a backyard path for him
You will be visited by 3 spirits...
Getting emails from LEGO First robotics teams that we mentored who advanced to the state competition. One team took 1st out of 31 teams at their regional! Archaeologists who participated in the global competition, you matter to these kids! π€©π₯ΉπΊ
I've been contemplating a PhD by publication, but it's not done here in the US! 25+ years in archaeology and 15 in archaeology/heritage education... probably a PhD or EdD isn't needed, but everything is wonky and unsecure here.
I'm delighted by this collective joy felt because of the Northern lights π©·πππ
Magenta and green Northern lights backlighting a tree and power lines
Green Northern lights lighting up the skyline
Iowa City, go outside now! The Northern Lights are visible from the naked eye, in town. I drove out to Hoover highway to get some photos, and the colors are almost more striking in town.
Maybe you don't need an I β€οΈ Archaeology "ugly" sweatshirt, but you don't NOT need it either! π βοΈπ
Me, trying to hammer out my two-hour public archaeology workshop for #PACMAC2025 on Friday, but the Lego robotics emails and calls just keep coming. #helpme
To anyone visiting Iowa City this week for #PACMAC2025, I highly recommend taking a quick break from the conference to go visit some kittens! $5 15-min visits on Thursday when you book with code "treats" www.facebook.com/events/85705... πΊ
I hear my cats stress eating their kibbles, because how dare I have a plumber invade their space to install a hot water heater and force them to hide in fear in the bedroom for four hours?
