The acclaimed independent podcast Shifting Terrain returns for its second season on 28 October.
Hosted by Rachel Rybaczuk, the show promises to unpack the political and cultural forces shaping and dividing America’s working class.

🚨publication alert! I’m so happy to see my co-authored piece on left populist online media with Manel Palos published. LeftTube is heavily under researched and studies that engages left populist media from a comparative perspective are even more rarer.
It’s not just that Trump broke the promise. It’s about the historical relationship of his supporters to the Epstein issue.

Fake weather real damage don’t accept the narrative question the cause
As climate change makes weather more severe and unpredictable we get “fake weather” conspiracism.
As part of this month's forum on Media & Fascism, @reecepeck.bsky.social explores Trump's alt-media strategy and shows why we need more historically engaged analyses of political communication strategy and tactics. Check it out!

🚨 I'm happy to see this published. My analysis of Trump's alt-media strategy in the 2024 election challenges purely technological & economic explanations of the right's online success.
@reecepeck.bsky.social writes about the cultural roots of Trump's alt-media strategy.

Mining was banned in northeastern Minnesota due to the irreversible damage it would do to the state’s fresh water.
A last-minute provision to the Republican budget bill will allow a Chilean magnate with ties to the Trump family to mine the protected lands.
Hasan Piker’s response to my quote in his NYT profile. I had a long convo w/ the reporter, but only 1 sentence made it, cutting the praise I gave Hasan for creating an on-ramp into progressive politics. It only included a line where I explain the limitations of an LA-style, hip media appeal.
Bad headline but read the article. It is more about the right claiming fitness subcultures, when the left could and needs to contest cuz this is an important community space for a lot of people. Most of the fitness influencers are in fact rightwing.
Barbells, beers, and socialism! Don't tempt me with a good time
yeah, I got my region and class critique in Times!
This is a problem with coming up with cheeky headlines like that because the author's argument has more to do with weight lifting as a subculture and its political valences.
My sister owns three strength training gyms in Austin and has cultivated a progressive culture in her gyms but she'd say in touring the country getting training that the overall fitness industry complex and influencer arm leans conservative but I don't have data.
And "The body" IS critical to political semiotics. Roger Ailes understood with his famous 'turning the mute' button technique when assessing Fox talent. Bourdieu argued that body image is one of the most indisputable aspects of class-cultural identity.
At least fitness influencers that is.
Not the best framing, but the fitness world is undeniably dominated by conservatives. Spaces like the gym need to be contested by the left.
“He’s more ‘events in SoHo’ than he is ‘Eastern Kentucky,’” as Mr. Peck put it. “That bicoastal, stylish, hip masculinity has its limitations to appeal to a broad array of young men, especially working-class young men.” Thoughts on Hasan Piker (who I like btw). www.nytimes.com/2025/04/27/s...
One striking thing looking at the history of media consumption in the US is that the prime time audiences of network and cable news *combined* does not add up to the audience of just one network news show in the 60s/70s, in an era when the US population was like 40+% smaller.
MASSIVE NEWS from progressive independent media. in Q1 2025 left wing YouTube grew far more quickly than right wing YouTube. Among independent channels, top left channels grew 33% faster than right wing channels from Jan-Mar. This is HUGE!
I’m speaking at the Institute of Public Knowledge this Tuesday at 5:30 PM. I analyze Trump’s alt-media strategy during the 2024 election & explore why Democrats failed to effectively counter it. ipk.nyu.edu/events/discu...

I decided to start a #thread 🧵 of stories about legal residents and tourists being (illegally) arrested, detained and/or deported by the Trump regime. I'll only post stories from serious sources, as rumors and conspiracies are really not needed in this authoritarian moment.
My appearance last night on CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper discussing Andrew Tate and Trump’s reliance on alt-right influencers.
