Seeking the light today, Jan. 20, 2025, Trump’s 2nd inauguration. This administration trumpets a platform of vindictiveness, revenge and repression. This admin thrives on the dumpster fires of divisiveness, misinformation and intimidation. It’s easy to feel that I am a peon, that 99.9% of us are peons who will never matter, never make a difference in the outcome of the world while the comforts of our lives hinge on those we serve. This is objectively true, has always been true to some extent. There are kings who pull strings according to whatever vanities suit them and the populace pays the price. But we do hold power on a daily basis—we can add light, even happiness to our surroundings. For example, in my past jobs in customer service, I often felt as though I mattered the least of anyone. Lately I’ve noticed what a difference it makes in my stressful days when a waiter or cashier gives me a genuine smile, patience, humor—reminders that we are connected, here together. It helps me kindle my own brightness, however small, to pass on.
It can feel like hard work, and anger often gets the best of me, but we have more agency to build the communities around us than what we tend to believe or take responsibility for. We citizens build the light and understanding. We are either the kindling for good or rage, there is no middle ground, for indifference fuels evil every time. So it is I watch the dawn of some strange new chapter. It’s the color of orange and red, and I turn to the stars and galaxies twinkling beyond with the knowledge that change is always inevitable, that light is defined by darkness, and I am resolved to be whatever small agent of positive change I can be. There will always be messages that I’m not doing enough for this or that, not giving enough, not caring enough, not good enough. No one can dictate what I have to offer or when or how. I must continually find the light within before I am able to share it. That is the hard part of the work. This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.🕯️✊💫
