So... A friend was supposed to give a PURELY SCIENTIFIC talk at NIH within the next couple of weeks and it was cancelled because of a "new process" where all speakers/talks have to be CLEARED BY A POLITICAL APPOINTEE.

The annual naming of the city snow plow contest is a Chicago tradition. Many great name suggestions as usual, but "Abolish ICE" seems a perfect one to land on. Love this city!
Also, recall that I examined grant title changes for evidence of βremediationβ and found 777 grants with titles changed from 2024 to 2025.
Here is a word cloud of the removed words.

This symposium at JHU today looks fantastic! Great line up of speakers, and I love the idea of brainstorming solutions during a 'pitch a problem' session.
People have have asked me what is going on in Chicago right now. The ICE situation is worse than you imagine. People are being violently detained, bystanders gassed, protesters assaulted. On the flip side, concerned citizens are mobilizing. Read this summary to learn more: aphyr.com/posts/397-i-...
One of the highlights of #ASHG25 was reading the "I Advocate for Science Because..." wall
An astonishingly large crowd!

Wow! Chicago definitely turned out.
We're excited to be recruiting an NIH funded postdoc to work in the Coop lab at UC Davis. We're specifically interested in candidates who are want to work at the intersection of human genetics, GWAS, and population genetics modeling. Please RT

Amen! Love that ASHG opened with a talk about the importance of diversity. Way to set the tone of the conference π #ASHG25
Fingers crossed! πΈ
aaand we are officially in the hide-your-neighbors stage
So... I did some analysis of grants that did receive noncompetitive renewals.
In particular, I looked a those award where the title of the grant changed.

BREAKING: Scientists are staging a βscience fairβ in the lobby of a Congressional building to tell elected officials about the critical knowledge the US will lose because their research grants have been canceled.
It was used to indicate different effect sizes (not statistical 'bias'). So population-biased eQTLs, sex-biased eQTLs = inclusive of poss 'pop-/sex-'specific. There was lots of discussion about how to refer to these. 'specific' was a hard "no" for many of the reasons mentioned above in this thread.
I agree!
URGENT: Please share widely with your networks!! Very tight turnaround (12 pm today 6/27) π§ͺ
Are you an early-career researcher working on the computational analysis of population-level human genetics data? We want to hear from you about if, how, and why you use population descriptors in your research! Fill out our short survey: forms.gle/SCiNUq71wgi5... π§¬π»π§ͺ
Yes! That would be fantastic for our trainees.

4 12x18 inch posters on a brick and concrete wall. The top left is pink and says funding science saves lives, written in microbes, next to a microscope. The one on the right says Biology is bigger than binaries, with a fish, a lily, and a bee. The bottom left says Protecting wildlife starts wtih you, with a bunch of adiorable woodland creatues in yellow, white and black, including an owl, fungi, a... um. weasel? salamanders, butterflies, slugs, and a rotting log. The bottom right says Will our oceans thrive or nosedive the choice is yours, with the ocean represented in a circle, half of which is dead and half of which is alive, including kelp and a mackerel
