Strikes on Iran Damage Cultural Heritage Sites, Infuriating Iranians

www.nytimes.com/2026/03/11/w... Golestan Palace dates to the 14th century, with its famed hall of mirrors. Iran is one example of many civilizations that create and maintain works of exquisite beauty over the millennia yet give rise to leaders capable of cruelty to their own and other peoples.

It’s Not Just Oil. The Iran War Is Disrupting Many Essential Goods.

www.nytimes.com/2026/03/10/b... From basic plastics and fertilizer made in Saudi Arabia and Oman, to sugar from Brazil and helium from Qatar, disruptions are raising prices.
Aluminum prices hit 4 years highs when deliveries from Qatar and Bahrain ceased (metal is used for planes, cans, power lines).

America produces substantially more oil than we consume. Although we import some oil from Canada and Mexico, while exporting even more from Texas, we buy hardly any oil from the Persian Gulf. Self-sufficiency in oil has done nothing at all to insulate the U.S. economy from Middle East chaos.

Trump Backing Co-founder Will Profit From Replacing Qatari LNG with U.S. exports The world’s largest LNG complex shut down last week after being hit by Iranian drones. That's created a huge opportunity for the U.S. billionaires behind Venture Global.

www.forbes.com/sites/christ... Mega-donor fortunes jumped $12B each when bombs hit Iran and drones torched Qatar's LNG plant. Their LNG build-out brought Louisiana coastal communities air pollution, heightened vulnerability to hurricanes, degradation of fishing and wetlands, chronic health issues.

Nelsons told me in 2016 that he would be β€œhugely cutting guesting,” that he would do β€œa week with the Vienna Philharmonic, a week in Berlin.” In 2017 he took the Philharmonic for 2 weeks in Asia. Every year since 2017 when Bachtrack has ranked the world's busiest conductors, Nelsons is 1st or 2nd.

You could trust Nelsons to conduct anything well - a fine Brahms cycle and an β€œElektra” of shocking power; the first installments of a recorded survey of the Shostakovich symphonies won Grammy Awards. In 2015, he took on another prestigious post, with the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, Germany.

The oil island that could break Iran President Donald Trump’s allies are urging him to take control of a small spit in the Persian Gulf that controls nearly all of Iran’s oil exports.

www.eenews.net/articles/the... About half of Iran’s $50 billion oil industry is controlled by the IRGC. That includes a ghost fleet of oil tankers that take its sanctioned crude abroad, mostly to China. Kharg Island export terminal in the Persian Gulf handles 90% of Iran's crude.

Trump moves to undo tax rule that Biden said would bring in $100 billion The Biden administration said large partnerships were illegally avoiding hundreds of billions in taxes. Trump says they shouldn’t have to report the transactions.

wapo.st/4ll10gE Transactions called β€œbasis shifting” have allowed businesses to dodge tens of billions of dollars in taxes, Treasury data show, by illegally depreciating the same asset over and over again. Trump is revoking Biden's crackdown on this practice in complex partnerships like Trump's.

America’s and Israel’s Goals Are Already Colliding Trump and Netanyahu seem to have very different ideas about how the war should end.

www.theatlantic.com/internationa... Trump has signaled his preferred outcome is an Iran led by a strongman who will cooperate with him on a peace deal and give the U.S. a slice of Iran’s oil industry.
