Do you know why a president would do all the most evil and heinous shit via Executive Order? Because his party can't easily make it law. And if they can't make it law, they can't make it last.
Don't let anyone make you feel like this is The End. Do not let them demoralize you. Live to see them die.
we made real progress over much of my life making society more accepting and reversing the veneration of bullies, and all that progress has been destroyed and watching these people revel in it fucking sucks
regardless of how centrist & moderate you try to position your politics, conservatives will still call you a Marxist, communist, anarchist, or socialist.
you might as well embrace leftism. Republicans are going to treat you the same way regardless.
The remote work debate was funny because it forced the question "Is a job something valuable you do or is it a place you go to be watched like daycare" and the answer for a lot of them was yeah it's the daycare thing now come on inside recess is over
Probably.
But what use is building shiny new facilities or amassing cash reserves if you can't use these resources to truly help the communities you claim to serve with those platitudinous speeches you give at your galas and local Rotary Club meetings?
Take a stand or become (more) irrelevant.
The result? You have organizations that excel at fundraising and funneling cash to capital campaigns and "self sufficency" programs, but little attention paid to the root causes of poverty and other forms of human suffering.
But "we can't get political or we will lose donors," the CEOs will say...
Many well-intentioned people joined the nonprofit sector as a way to effect change, but with the exception of the minority of orgs that conduct meaningful political advocacy, most are doing little more that helping the rich feel good about themselves while maintaining the status quo...
Food banks represent a history of elite hostility toward people in poverty at the highest levels of government as well as the retreat of the left to philanthropy as a solution to problems that individual communities (even rich ones) can never truly fix on their own...
We saw this with Reagan in the 1980s. An example: Food banks were a direct response to cuts to government food aid.
Today, they're everywhere and among the most visible social service orgs in most communities.
They are also monuments to failure...
The U.S. nonprofit sector is not prepared for this administration.
So many orgs have cultivated donors based on a position of apolitical neutrality. But no amount of "plucky do-gooderism" is going to make up for a solid plan to deal with current political realities...
Thank you for writing this.
Youβre all about to be gaslit about that Nazi salute and Iβm begging you to spend no time on it. You know what you saw.
Congrats. Also: This list rules.
If I had read this a few years ago, I wouldn't have believed you. But it did get better. Quality SPED programs were a huge part of it. Also, Bluey and camping trips.
How do we feel about three BASS guitars a la Spinal Tap?
The loss of institutional knowledge when civil servants exit the federal government is going to be massive. I imagine public admin academics will be studying the effects for years. Heartbreaking.
I truly feel for my friends working for the federal gov't right now. I'm sure a lot of folks are weighing their options with this new administration.
Your last saved meme is your new philosophy.
Actually pretty spot on. Puns are great.
Sunday scaries are not something you get when you're a cat.
Depends, I think. Are you a blue hedgehog whose catchphrase is "gotta go fast"?
That was my approach and it worked for me.
Does this mean that National Pie Day is moving to January 9th (as opposed to the usual March 13th)?
Update: The new tattoo didn't fix me. It is hella cool, though.
From what I've observed, most of the genuinely cool/interesting people who actually enjoy their professions are tattoo artists and first-generation college students-turned academics.
Neither really need LinkedIn.
Seems like everyone else has to develop a fake persona to appear "professional." π
The shepsky is enjoying the Texas snow storm.
I still remember Trump calling Obama a noncitizen to the applause of the far right. Baby's first major political conspiracy.
If Obama had any decency, he would support efforts to hijack the incoming president's agenda.
But, apparently, we are going to straight up cuddle with the enemy instead.
I'm looking forward to reading it!
My agency does a book club on topics related to homelessness every quarter. Looks like we have one for this spring!
