After that, the next record we find is the 1910 probate file for his son, William. While these records do not provide a detailed exploration of what life was like for the Dedrick family in the late 19th century, they do provide a glimpse of the accomplishments and life lived here in Travis County.
In 1873, Mr. Dedrick and Adam Shepard purchased what is now the historic Dedrick-Hamilton House on E. 11th Street for $112 in gold, plus a $400 promissory note, plus six percent interest for two additional years (about $14,006.30 in 2025 dollars before interest).
That same year, he married Ella Marshall. Their June 30, 1867, marriage record appears under another misspelling, “Dietrich.”
and later, probate records tied to his son, William.
We initially see Mr. Dedrick on the 1867 voter registration roll—the first year Black residents in Travis County could register to vote. His name appears misspelled as “Deitchric,” but details point to him.
In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, the Travis County Clerk’s team explored the history of the Dedrick family in Travis County.
