โUruguay did what most nations still call impossible: it built a power grid that runs almost entirely on renewablesโat half the cost of fossil fuels. The physicist who led that transformation says the same playbook could work anywhereโif governments have the courage to change the rules.โ

This heatwave is bad.
The bushfires it is enabling are also bad.
Climate scientists & meteorologists are incredibly concerned about the next 48 hours.
And this is just a taste of what's to come.

After Bondi, calls for a Royal Commission appeared overnight, delivered by rotating groups using identical language. That is astroturfing, a PR tactic that simulates grassroots demand to manufacture urgency, crowd out scrutiny, and lock in policy before evidence is tested. More on YT
There are concerns women wearing hijabs are bearing the brunt of a "horrifying" wave of Islamophobia in the wake of the Bondi Beach terrorist attack, with the Australian National Imams Council reporting a rise of hate incidents.
"fresh survey of eight sites along WA's Ningaloo Reef has revealed more than 60 per cent of corals have died [..] Of the 1,600 corals counted in March, only 600 were still alive come late October"
Beach walking at sunset is not very calming when the local beach has 100000s of dead and dying fish. The impact of the algae bloom in South Australia continues to be devastating for marine life ๐ฟ
So much opportunity for Australia to lead, and so much apathy by decision makers

As it's October and the 'Halloween as an imported American thing' discourse has begun, I thought I'd mention that in Australia, the Scottish diaspora, especially in the first half of the 20th century, celebrated Halloween as a particular Scottish tradition, as attested to by many articles on Trove.
The conversation between Klein and Coates showed me that a lot of people who screech about โinfightingโ on the left arenโt aware of the fact that marginalized people have been forced to learn how to regulate their emotions during conflict, and so, are better able to hear whatโs actually being said.
My newest on substack: did you hate the book? Or did you hate the character? And if you hated the character, you actually loved the book.

Early last semester, Droubi said, students began approaching Cheyfitz with complaints that a graduate student in the โGaza, Indigeneity, Resistanceโ class appeared to be recording them, possibly to โgather their names and commentsโ and intimidate them. โWe believe that a student came to the course for the sole reason of surveilling and potentially harming students in the class,โ Droubi said. โThat ended up proving itself to be true because multiple students came forward and shared their concerns with Professor Cheyfitz.โ Cheyfitz said one Palestinian student quit the class after telling him she felt upset and frightened. Current Issue Cover of October 2025 Issue October 2025 Issue According to Cheyfitz, the graduate student often steered conversations away from the assigned readingsโwhich at that point mostly focused on definitions of genocide and international law on Indigenous rightsโto defend Israelโs conduct in the war in Gaza and argue with others in the class. โHe clearly had not done the readings,โ Cheyfitz said. โIt was disruptive.โ Cheyfitz said he met with the graduate student in late January and spoke to him about concerns from his classmates. During the conversation, he asked the graduate student to drop the course, and by the next class, he did, Cheyfitz said. The graduate student, Oren Renard, a PhD candidate in computer science whose identity was confirmed by other students in the class, previously served in Israelโs elite military surveillance agency, Unit 8200, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Cornell is cancelling a distinguished professor's classes on Gaza and suspending him because of the complaints of a student who previously served in Israel's military surveillance agency and was literally recording the comments of other students in class and deliberately derailing discussion.
