There was a pundit class determined to insist that Trump had presided over a durable political realignment, because realignments are sexy.

Unsurprisingly, it turns out to have been the normal political pendulum, which pundits hate.

it really is unfortunately this simple - we elected the stupidest narcissists absolutely convinced that they could just go and "assert warfighter dominance" or whatever, those pussy liberals didn't wanna FIGHT!!!, and are just now shocked that the enemy gets a vote too

In assessing the nyt, I looked at publisher AG Sulzberger’s own words in an interview w David Remnick in ‘23. He defended its trans coverage while acknowledging there are “bad faith actors who are trying to undermine trans people and attack trans rights”

What kind of actor has the nyt been?🧵

Voting machine company Smartmatic says DOJ is targeting it to bolster false 2020 claims The company asked a judge to dismiss foreign bribery charges filed against it last year, alleging a vindictive and selective prosecution.

Smartmatic — the voting machine company at the heart of Trump's 2020 election lies — just accused the Trump Justice Department of vindictive and selective prosecution, saying that DOJ is now bringing a criminal case against them to further the Trump admin's baseless lies about that vote.

Apart from the moral repugnance, this is so revealing of how ignorant conservatives are about poverty. Poor people have to think about money ALL THE TIME. They worry constantly about what everything costs, how to substitute one purchase for another, what bill can be put off until payday, etc.

This has been pointed out many times (including by Evan!), but it bears repeating that this is the same playbook used to sow suspicion on vaccinations and the existence of climate change.

Skepticism about vaccines was once a fringe view, held by a small group of Americans.
But the Covid-19 pandemic, with its mandates and rapid rollout of vaccines, breathed new vigor into the anti-vaccine movement and bred hostility toward the medical establishment.

“The pandemic” didn’t “breathe” the hesitance, @apoorvanyt.bsky.social. The anti-vaccine movement leaders made a conscious decision to exploit it to undermine trust. They literally made videos about how they would do exactly that, before the vaccines existed. Show your readers those videos!

keep in mind that, for years, orban has been waging war on 'foreign influence', shutting down NGOs & universities & taking over state & private media.

this is hypocrisy on steroids & highly telling abt orban's version of 'sovereignty' (which is simply code for personal power)

Gavin Newsom seems to do well in Dem primary polls in a time period when polls are largely driven by name ID. But it seems like almost no political elites or major party factions on either the center or the left in the Dem Party (i.e., those not going on name ID) actually support him.

One thing I've been stressing is that, if Hormuz traffic remained stopped, the monumental oil supply shock will manifest as sharp price spikes in wealthy nations that sap disposable incomes

In poorer countries, the shock will manifest as outright physical shortages.

I'm disappointed that many journalists writing about Prasad's demise at the FDA treat him as a reasonable, good faith actor with communication problems, when in reality, he was a COVID disinformation doctor and pro-MAHA propagandist.

I was in a 2 hour briefing today on the Iran War. All the briefings are closed, because Trump can't defend this war in public.

I obviously can't disclose classified info, but you deserve to know how incoherent and incomplete these war plans are.

1/ Here's what I can share:

He also referred to CBS News having editorial independence as it is being restructured under Free Press editor Bari Weiss and TV veteran Tom Cibrowski."

I still think it's funny (and telling) that they think it assuages anybody's fear about CNN's editorial independence to tell them to look at what's happening under Bari Weiss at CBS News

this is *particularly* fucking stupid when republicans are all saying that gas prices rising isn’t a big deal and it’ll all be over any day now. unbelievably bad political instincts from kelly and blumenthal here.

Good item.

And I will remind everyone again: Most politicians on most issues are, uh, shall we say, flexible.

The Dem nominee is going to accept the Dem party agenda on almost everything. Successfully pushing the party in the direction you want changes the nominee, whoever it winds up being.

its cool how we’ve spent decades anticipating this exact scenario where a cornered iran would mine or otherwise deny access to the strait and the US gov is just like “woah, no idea they’d play this card in response to [operation: no iranian government official left alive]”

RESULT: The AP calls it, that there will be a runoff between Democrat Shawn Harris and Republican Clayton Fuller in April (meaning they’ll take the top 2 spots and neither will get 50%).

This is the reddest district in Georgia, though Dems are at least going to get a big overperformance today.

Helps bail out Trump from his own idiotic decisions, while reducing gov revenue and will earn no credit from voters in the process. Brilliant.

democrats still seem to be laboring under the delusion that they can introduce stuff to pass while trump is president and they, not trump, will somehow get credit for it. they learned nothing from trump taking credit for covid stimulus checks

I think this story is a really good example for people to look at when it comes to understanding bias at NYT. It's not that the reporter, Dana Rubinstein, says anything outright false. But the framing, word choices, etc., add up to an unprofessional and biased account.
