Katrina that’s really kind of you - but you’re not obliged to do my research! I came across the reference to ‘shuttle-gathering’ in a history of Accrington Co-op where it’s presented as an alternative to plug-drawing so I wondered if it had been used in 1842 & whether it was an Accrington specialty!

Just read a beautiful passage from Book 3, Ch.2 in #Gissing’s ‘The Whirlpool’ where Harvey Rolfe has an epiphanic moment when he realises that some of his childhood wonder will also be experienced by his son. Not quite what you’d expect from Gissing - eirenic rather than acerbic.
