The experience at SSA demonstrates 3 things about the DRP:

SSI recipients are currently only allowed to save $2,000 (for individuals) or $3,000 (for couples). After that they lose their entire monthly benefit. We need to update the rules so that people can save enough to meet their needs

SSA should continue to follow the same rule it uses for people receiving SSI and withhold no more than 10% of a person’s monthly check. This would ensure that SSA fulfills its mission to provide financial protection to the people in our nation rather than pushing beneficiaries into crisis
SSA has acknowledged that many overpayments were caused by government errors and fixed this policy in response to bipartisan concern about the significant harm it caused older adults, people with disabilities, and their families.
Thanks to KFF Health News and many others for reporting on this issue. SSA's decision to reverse a policy designed to prevent beneficiaries from losing their entire monthly income when repaying mistakenly issued benefits is extremely disappointing.
