I've sadly lost quite a few subscribers since moving my newsletter from Substack, so I would greatly appreciate it if you signed up now that it's on Ghost.

After revelations that companies like Ring have been selling home security footage to ICE, the most common defense of keeping a camera up seems to be, β€œBut what if I’m stalked?”

And as a violence researcher, I’m just here to state for the record that police do not care about your security footage.

But in January, the Justice Department acknowledged in court documents that DOGE members had accessed and shared sensitive Social Security data without the awareness of agency officials.

Borges’s attorneys were told this year that the Office of Special Counsel would stop reviewing his allegations while the GAO conducts a government-wide review of DOGE’s access to sensitive data. However, the GAO audit does not provide protections to whistleblowers, raising concerns from legal experts that it will be difficult for people with sensitive information to come forward.

No offense to GAO here, but it is an auditor, nor a criminal investigator, which is what is needed. If the administration refuses to co-operate, or launch its own investigation, we will end up without real accountability.

Holy shit - this would be very, very bad:
"The databases, called β€œNumident” and the β€œMaster Death File,” include records for more than 500 million living and dead Americans, including Social Security numbers, places and dates of birth, citizenship, race and ethnicity, and parents’ names."

Even as a cynical scholar of rape culture, I'm shocked that this isn't the headline story on domestic politics everywhere right now. It's just an unfathomable abuse of power, in clear violation of the law.

i usually avoid the spending frame because public health costs so little compared to everything else it shouldn’t even be part of the conversation, but sometimes it just infuriates me how corrupt they are

I think it's genuinely pathetic that he needs to put this square-jawed superhero version of himself into a video game to push his dangerous ignorance on the rest of us. A truly miserable person imposed upon us by the rotten-to-the core GOP.

I can't help but think of it as one of those brands you'd find in just about any shopping mall in the 1970s and 1980s.

I can't think of Florsheim without thinking of being a kid walking around Long Ridge Mall in Greece NY in the 1970s and 80s. The Florsheim store was near the Fanny Farmer which is the only reason I noticed it.

What's going on is that health policy is being driven by the personal vanity of a man who believes based on nothing that he knows better than people with decades of expertise.

No matter what this cost both this and the Secretary himself are a waste of public funds every day he remains there.

disgusting… I don't care how they dress it up or how many fake experts they get to back them up, the recommended daily allowance of RFK Jr. is 0; even a single nanogram is considered harmful

The funniest thing about this is that it didn't occur to rubio just to buy a pair of these shoes in his own size.

i’d go so far as to say bernie’s and warren’s proposals aren’t harsh enough. just take anything at or above a billion

don’t care about the revenue. light it on fire for all i care. it’s erasing political power and putting people in their place that matters

It’s 64 degrees. I’m so happy I could hump a lamppost. In fact, I just might.

I’m a WHORE for this weather. A FLOOZY for this Fahrenheit. A SLUT for these unseasonable conditions. My legs are open to the sun. Burn my underwear away! TAKE ME INTO YOUR RADIANT ARMS.

It took a bit of effort to find the name of the new Bluesky CEO not because it's hidden but because there are so many shitposts about and I hope this change in management doesn't change this beautiful site.

Yeah I hit very little traffic on the way down here and I don't know if that's just because it was a non-holiday Sunday in March or if people are already backing off less essential driving.

Yeah gas at home went from 3.09 -> 3.49 Monday to Monday, wondering what it will be when I'm back.

Not driving for work makes a huge difference. But I do use more gas than that seems like because of the trips to Pennsylvania and the driving I do while I'm here. The overwhelming majority of miles I drive aren't where I live.
