Horror writers of Bluesky, do you think it’s better for a story to start off with some description to set the mood/atmosphere, or should it start with some action to hook you? I’m struggling with my current project quite a bit. It’s the first horror thing I will have published in years.

Thanks, Gree :)

I must admit, I find action scenes really hard.

Probably the closest I get in this is the protagonist's encounter with a helium birthday balloon turned massive insect. #HorrorWritersChat

Red mist obscured my vision. Only when silence fell did I stop, allow the axe to slip to the ground. I had filled the field with corpses, slain the monster. Or had I? At my feet lay the bodies of friends despatched by my frenzied blade, and I realised a new monster walked.

Thanks for the questions, Gree! Loved hearing about everyone's favorite action horror.

Fitting the topic, my latest horror/supernatural thriller is now available in print. Check it out if you're looking for a tight, fast-paced, creature feature: a.co/d/0fmd8tbY

Learned this in my early 20s when my mom got early onset Alzheimer’s-dementia. It is exhausting, and caregivers do not get paid enough for all of the important work they do. I could not do it full-time.

My vision is tainted with red. The burn of that unholy liquid stings as sharp as their fangs.
Before I turn, I’ll take out as many of them as I can.

The Xenomorph, hands down. My mileage with the Alien movies is better than most. I tend to like the ones that others don't and like less the ones that others enjoy, but the design and world-building around them is glorious.

I think the Scorpion Mother in DEEP DOWN is my version.

#HorrorWritersChat Q4:

But that stinging only contributes to the growing blood haze.

Another swing, another infernal head crushed beneath the dull blade.

They used to be human... I used to be-

I swing again, tainted blood flecks into my mouth.

It tastes familiar. Something I forgot. Like home.

While I do love a unique creature with its own lore, vampires are hard to beat. Being turned adds a whole new aspect to the horror, much like with zombies.

So far I've only used a vampire once. I love em, but I haven't thought of that many cool, new ways to use them.

I love vampires. Have ever since I was a kid and nobody knows what that *ah ha* moment was, least of all me.

It's not in the blood, that's for sure.

Characters with vampiric natures, rather than the typical aesthetic (which I love) are in my work.

I love the protagonist that's trying to figure out how to deal with it all, Shaun of the Dead, and someone that gets smart about it all, Ripley.

I have both in my books.
My favourite scene is Trig trying to kill someone with a pillow, and Raven saying, "they can still breathe."

Any monster can be an action horror monster, so long as it raises its fist/claw/hoof for an attack.

If I had to choose (tough choice), strange fauna would be mine. I've used giant crawlies, birds of all feathers, and the deer and the antelope in such ways...

Zombies/vampires appear a lot in my stories. Death/undeath fascinate me. Especially relic cults; hope coming from death is probably my most Catholic trait

I guess my "Fr Marcellus the Vampire Priest stories aren't very action-y... until he has to fight. Then it gets gruesome

Q3: #HorrorWritersChat

Xenomorphs, clearly. The idea that they molt into the most deadly version of their host is awesomely horrifying. Every alien bug since is a riff on Xeno’s anyway, stick to the sickest, slimiest, most perfectest monster!

I can pick only one? 🫣 I like aliens, vampires, the Old Ones, unusual folkloric creatures like Red Caps and the Rusalka, werewolves, zombies, deceased family/friends who haunt you in an evil manner - completely unlike when they were alive. There are many more.

Resident Evil baddies like William or baddies like Lady Dimitrescu? πŸ˜‰ Two very different meanings πŸ˜‚

11.03.2026 19:45 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

#HorrorWritersChat, I like mutated horrors from beyond. So, think Resident Evil baddies, but add a shadowy, eldritch twist.

Just big ol' messes of terror and blood.

And yes, they very much do show up in my writing! One WIP of mine is an Earth full of those sort of monsters.
