The troubles

The Irish Independent's (and some others) approach to this ICE detention story is appalling.
There's clear public interest in the impact of ICE on Irish emigrants regardless of who they are. But whether we should have sympathy for Culleton is not and undermines the actual public interest issue.

Thank goodness someone is looking at their wider activities and how they can be reconcile with their comments here today.
They are actively lobbying for less regulation and using US political actors to apply pressure on the EU.
Now can someone look at their promotional material to advertisers.
Again good question.
But again TikTok is big....so someone's gotta get hurt for us to stay this big. Obvious measures like more staff, more investment not even addressed. Such a lack of problem solving capacity.
Boom I am glad someone got to this point - It is a question of who should be responsible - the platforms want users to be primarily responsible for verifying content, risk assessments, for their own policy compliance.
Given they are in the best position to take responsibility why don't they?
It can be a good idea - to challenge these guys on the basis of what they are advertising and how they are promoting what they do.
The objection to the under 16 ban would impact the collection of that which is fundamental to their profit model.
For anyone following - the transparency reports are insufficient for any meaningful research into systemic problems on social media. #speirgorm
Nudification is not the only way AI us used to abuse and humiliate - they need to address a much wider range of harms. Saying that the programs are prohibited from responding to requests like this is far too narrow.

Moss is there telling everyone what the law is, what ethics are, and that TikTok is a big company. Meade and O'Brion are waffling and deflecting.
Can we get someone in the room who can interrogate them please. #speirgorm

In 2022 I started tracking changes in how news outlets were describing trans people, and set up a bot to record every article pushed to the Google News index based on a handful of search phrases, including βbiological sexβ in both the US and UK. The amount in 2023 alone was absolutely staggering.

Although IMO its not just a failure of leadership at the top levels, it is far more pervasive than that.

When countries get hooked on US tech, their governments are constrained in reining in techβs harms while most of the economic benefits accrue to the United States.
Itβs time to break out of that trap β but that means challenging the Silicon Valley model, not creating our own digital colonizers.
My line of work is rather uncommon: I'm an editor specialized in comms and editorial in the IGO/security sector β specifically disarmament issues
