Been thinking how much our generation came of age when disruption was the major paradigm when actually a lot of human needs comes under the umbrella of the opposite of innovation: maintenance and care.

An early 1900s anti-sufferage double-sheet editorial cartoon titled “why not go the limit” - in “Mrs. P. J. Gilligan’s” pub the male-dominated norms are upended by an entirely female clientele. Women during, gamble, smoke, casually carouse, & monitor racetrack & stock tickers, munching on snacks & in one case frustratedly ignore a pair of young children. In the back, men are relegated to a “gentleman’s parlor,” & posters of female pugilists, female-owned business ventures, & tawdry doings paper the walls. Some women even wear tailored suits. This supposedly nightmarish scene looks to modern (& period eyes of the equality-minded) like a rollicking good time & serves an inadvertent stinging rebuke of male-dominated shared public cultural spaces

It’s #InternationalWomen’sDay, an annual moment to reflect on stuff like this & demand to be threatened w/ a good time:

The Knight is the tang of sap / bark rough and petal soft / everywhere leaves scatter / easily crushed / Gawain clings / hardly knows what he clings to / he is the forest and the flower / a turmoil of roots / where god and tree meet and melt / the birch the oak the fern the deer / mushroom maggot crow / here Gawain is branch and bud / blow returned for blow
