They have a four way variety bend for milling wheat - this is delivering significantly less disease compared to single variety crops. Arable costings are £372 per ha compared to averages of £850 per ha seen elsewhere. #ResilientfarmRoadshow
Angus Gowthorpe presenting
Angus Gowthorpe 430 ac mixed farm in the Vale of York. #AHDB #ResilientFarmRoadshow
Since 2014 his approach has been farming with nature. The soil comes first - direct drilling, extensive use of cover crops, integrating livestock and low inputs are at the core of this.
Having more organic matter in your soil means the soil can hold more nutrients and water holding capacity - it takes tike to build up soil heath but its pays back in dividends.
Healthy soils for resilience - as a start point knowing what you've got and knowing where you're heading is key.
If you want to know the potential of your soil, look in the hedgerows and compare it with whats in the middle of the field. Its the same soil, just managed differently.
Can you operate a farm system that thrives with minimal inputs?
Diversity is the key to resilience, it takes more management but it spreads the risk and makes you stronger.
Stephen Briggs standing by a screen during his presentation
Stephen Briggs at The AHDB #ResilientFarmRoadshow started by exploring resilience with a wide lens - 'what are the shocks to our farm systems that we're looking to recover from?' Economic, environmental or political? Can you function if there is a supply chain shock?

🌳Hedgerow Management: 'No Cut' Period 🪚🙅♂️
Under Rural Payments Agency rules, you must not cut or trim #hedgerows from 1/3-31/8.
🐝These rules protect hedgerows on farms which provide vital ecosystem services for wildlife, water and soil.

Heritage wheats
In our early years of growing YQ wheat it gave us great resilience - we realised it was modern wheats that weren't working for us. We then started growing older and older wheats and engaging with a whole new supply chain of artisan bakers. @greenacresfarm.bsky.social
