The front cover of The Cambridge Companion to Romanticism & Race, edited by Manu Chander. The cover picture is of Kehinde Wileyβs Prelude. In the art work a Black youth in a long overcoat is viewed from behind, and replaces the central figure in Caspar David Friedrichβs famous painting of a solitary figure looking out across misty mountain tops.

A big thank you to @profchander.bsky.social for including my essay on β Disability & Raceβ in a vol much needed in the β80s, when I was an undergrad. Thanks, too, to St Hughβs Oxford, for letting me air my work as the Lady Ademola lecture. Lady Ademola is an inspiration.

When I was 5, I loved science, which I took to be planets and magnets and chemicals and shit.
Soon I realized science was a collective human activity, and these were just the objects of its attention.
Anyway, whenever I read an OpEd on how science isn't political, I think "Are you 5 years old?"
Finally assimilating this obit and this lossβ a poet & critic meet in an Indiana elevator, and together reshape the fundamental structure of literary criticism and, in the process, the general ideological field of the world. What a beautiful legacy. RIP.

Itβs amazing to me, & something I observe in my book, that the advice of actual activists like Grace Lee Boggs, below, via @prisonculture.bsky.social, sounds so little like the revolutionary action-fantasies expressed in (mostly male) social media posts & much more like the plot of Middlemarch

Talked to my husband for the first time in that building! He complimented a Hunter x Hunter shirt I was wearing after a British 19th-cent. lit class and it was the highlight of my month lol. Always loved the mixed architecture that made up the humanities circle at UCI.
if i've learned one thing from doing union stuff while also doing other forms of organizing, it's that you're better off with people you disagree with who are nevertheless trying to do the same thing as you than with people you agree with who aren't trying to do anything
