Promising to abolish stamp duty is a great way to crash housing activity. Who’d buy a house in the next two years?

Trump 'ready' to sanction Russia if Nato nations stop buying its oil The US president has repeatedly threatened tougher measures against Moscow, but has so far failed to take action.

Putin will be laughing his head off. NATO includes non-aligned Turkey. Trump has no intention of sanctioning Russia and has found a formulation to point the finger elsewhere. Despicable.

Sir John Curtice: How Reform's capture of the Brexit vote could be enough to win an election The party has now been ahead in the polls for five months, but can it keep the momentum?

Well worth reading. Suggests Labour has nothing to lose by taking Brexit head on to shore up its core vote and improve the economy. Aping Farage only strengthens his minority support. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Climate Sceptic Goes Unchallenged on BBC’s Today Programme The BBC’s flagship current affairs show this week has hosted a climate sceptic with links to the gas sector without declaring the guest’s professional ties, DeSmog can reveal. Kathryn Porter was intro...

BBC News platforms a climate sceptic on Radio 4 World at One to back up Reform’s questionable view that fossil fuels are cheaper than renewables. The fact she also disputes global warming should be mentioned as essential context. www.desmog.com/2023/06/22/c...

I’m in both camps.

AI, like the spreadsheet or the internet, can empower its users to achieve greater productivity and - in theory - better living standards.

Coupled with social media, it also empowers those wishing to subvert democracy and undermine human agency. That’s what we need to fight.

BBC news seems to have adopted what I presume is the government’s distinction between those crossing in small boats and β€˜genuine asylum seekers’. They should reconsider, not least given the proportion of the latter who have their asylum claims approved.
