Drew this at Boba Loca in Downtown Burbank. The owner told me they were wondering why they've been suddenly getting a lot more people buying boba from them lately, like 20-30 people at a time from the local theaters. Couldn't help but smile.

Anyhow, support local small businesses when you can!

This week, I’ve been a part of a fascinating fruit fly identification workshop! Taught by Luc Leblanc of University of Idaho in collaboration with the USDA and CDFA. This workshop has reinforced why pest surveillance and control are so critical, especially for public health and agriculture!

Did outreach at a local elementary school here in Davis and helped with β€œScience Night!” It was fun helping with the β€œpetting zoo” and handling the Australian spiny leaf insect (Extatosoma tiaratum). I had fun talking to the kids and their parents about bugs!!! 🐞 πŸ›πŸœπŸ¦ŸπŸͺ²

I had a great time at the annual AMCA meeting in San Juan this year. I had the honor to be the co-chair for the AMCA YP’s this year and helped organized a lot of the events. It meant a lot to help organize, lead, and see everything come together. I look forward to now being the new YPs chair!

Scientists: During my masters, we would print out these grid aids for easy organization and glue them on to the freezer boxes- I’m trying to find a template online, but I can’t- does anyone have a template and is willing to send it to me? Thank you!!!

I’ve been going to concerts as a β€œhobby” & I’m so tired of other peers asking things like:
-β€œhow do you have time to do this”
-β€œhow can you you afford this”
1) It’s at 9 pm on a weekend?
2) Everyone saves & uses their stipend differently!?
Anyways I got to see Tyler, the Creator last night in Sac!

Any talk you hear from the current administration about making the US more competitive in science and technology is utter bullshit. What they are doing is sabotaging our country for years if not decades to come.

To my colleagues, friends, and everybody else in the federal workforce, including from the NIH and the CDC, you are all heroes and deserve so much better than the obtuse insanity you’re all living through at the moment.

Rest assured that we are with you in this fight and unafraid πŸ’ͺ!

Eight months ago, I packed up my life and moved across the country for a job with USDA. After seven years of study and training, I was excited to use the skills I had developedβ€”and excited to serve my country in a way that matteredβ€”protecting our nation’s food crops from insect pests. (1)

Mostly preaching to the choir here, but a group of us moderators over on Reddit's AskScience put together kind of an explainer for the implications of some of the attacks on science funding and infrastructure in the US if it's useful for anyone else to share:

Every scientist, long before they were a scientist, was a little kid who stood in front of a fish tank or stared up at the stars or turned over a rock to look at the bugs underneath and said β€œwow”. On the best days, working in science still feels like that.

I escaped poverty because I am a scientist.

And I am a scientist because of the National Science Foundation.

My heart and emotion go out to all having their work and science on the line right now. It’s hard seeing online this week the people that mentored and inspired me in this field be impacted. You matter and so does your science ❀️.
