Every war has been won by cutting taxes and juicing energy consumption.
So instead of condemning a constituency for decisions that seem to harm the common good, we should try to understand the chain of forces shaping those decisions and work to redirect those forces toward social cohesion.
People resist the idea that they’re being carried along by larger forces, the way a wave breaks on the shore. But that’s often how history actually moves. Causes propagate through networks of pressure, fear, hope, and habit long before individuals consciously “choose” anything.
