The announcement today from the Albanese Labor Government to send an E-7A Wedgetail aircraft to the Gulf and provide medium-range air-to-air missiles to the UAE shows Australia has been fully dragged into another US forever war.

Oh no, thats not great! It would be better if they only did the burnables, but guessing there is no alternative for the plastics etc?

That said, I think the poet is scared, and I would be too!

Interesting! Here it's very much do it or nature will do it... small regular burn offs are "shallow" and fast moving only impacting dead leaf litter etc. If not done, burnable material builds up and fires are hot and intense, slow to leave, so the trees and large habitats are completely destroyed.

Also known as the "Northern Ireland Conflict" this was from the late 1960's to around 1998
I believe Michael is disagreeing with "the opposite of war is civilisation". He shows how the differing parts of his community are working together. If these people are civilised, why are they being killed?

John Glenday
Imagine You are Driving
Imagine you are driving
nowhere, with no one beside you;
with the empty road unravelling and ravelling
in sympathy as the wheel turns in your hands.
On either side the wheatfields go shimmering
past in an absence of birdsong, and the sky
decants the shadows of the weather from itself.
So you drive on, hopeful of a time
when the ocean will rise up before you like dusk
and you will make landfall at last β
some ancient, long-forgotten mooring,
which both of you, of course, will recognise;
though as I said before, there is no one beside you
and neither of you has anywhere to go.
Imagine you are driving
nowhere, with no one beside you;
with the empty road unravelling and ravelling
in sympathy as the wheel turns in your handsβ¦
βJohn Glenday, βImagine You are Drivingβ

A write up done on Poetry Foundation a few days ago. I hadn't realised how well known and influential he was until I researched this post. This poem came from my first leuchtturm book of poetry- I had a lot of his work because he sounded just like me.

Isn't it just so well behaved! I used it coincidentally when I was testing some low quality paper yesterday and it was one of the few that didn't bleed or feather.

The poem is a little long to share a screenshot of, but I found it here, as part of a tribute to him after his passing: nzpoetryshelf.com/2025/02/26/p...

I love David Ignatow's work, I'm suprised there isn't more online, and he is barely talked about! He has a really surreal bent in some of this work that I live, while others like Bagel are very lighthearted and observational.
