I particularly enjoyed exchanges with colleagues from and on #China, #Taiwan, #Japan, #SouthKorea, #India, #Thailand, #Australia and #NewZealand. Given the global changes over the past three years, it is crucial to stay connected and explore opportunities for long-term cooperation.
It was therefore fascinating to hear how #ASEAN is reframing the concept by shifting the focus away from security issues, with #Thailand’s perspective being especially insightful.
Key takeaway: EU is seldom perceived as a central actor in the region. Nations, especially #France with its territories, appear more relevant. Since the Indo-Pacific concept is still strongly tied to #security policy, #NATO and its cooperation with #SouthKorea & #Japan were seen as more important.
I was glad to be part of the #China team at the "EU in the Indo-Pacific Jean Monnet Network" final event in #Brussels. It was a great opportunity to connect with colleagues and contribute to the debates. #EU #IndoPacific
I would also like to sincerely thank my colleagues at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg for a wonderful academic year of collaboration and learning 😊
I am pleased to share that I started a new postdoctoral position @ruhr-uni-bochum.de
In my project (habilitation), I will be exploring “Political Steering in Critical Technologies in the PRC and Its Implications for the European Union”.

Join us online to hear Ilker Gündoğan @ilkergundogan.bsky.social talk about football politics in China on April 11 (Friday)!
Dr. Gündoğan also researched China's responses to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, published last year in JCCA @jcca-gigahamburg.bsky.social journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10....
I am really impressed with what you can do with #AI these days. At the #AAS2025 conference, I learned how to create an AI-generated podcast. I made one about my book 'The Politics of Football in China' (Palgrave Macmillan). It's not perfect, but it's pretty good. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWV7...
As I head to Ohio for #AAS2025 I got the bad news that IFLE, the branch of the Dept of Ed that administers the Title VI National resource center program, has been eliminated. Future of @ceas.arizona.edu is unclear.
I'm sorry to hear that. My solidarity also goes out to you, Scott. I think I speak for the vast majority of my German and European colleagues here.
Happy to present alongside Hannes Gohli, Vivien Markert and Ceren Ergenc. I'm looking forward to engaging and insightful discussions in our panel "The State’s Guiding Role in Resource Allocation: Contributions to Political Steering Theory in China", chaired by Sabrina Habich-Sobiegalla.
This presentation is based on a chapter from my book "The Politics of Football in China" (Palgrave, lnkd.in/eJYH9kSg). My PhD supervisor, Albrecht Sonntag, will surely smile when he sees me using "soccer" instead of "football" - a deliberate choice to connect with American colleagues, sorry Albrecht
Excited to be presenting at #AAS2025 in Columbus, Ohio. My paper, "Steering 'Irrational' Chinese Overseas Soccer Investment in Europe: China's Party-State and Business Relations in Xi Jinping's Era of 'Top-level Design'", explores the interactions between the Chinese party-state and corporate actors
The front cover of Ilker Gundogan's book The Politics of Football in China. The cover photograph shows a football stadium lit up at night with roads and buildings around it.
The latest book in my Palgrave Studies in Sport and Politics series has landed. @ilkergundogan.bsky.social explores The Politics of Football in China in this excellent monograph. #sportpolitics #newbook #palgravemacmillan
The book...
-Provides an understanding of Xi Jinping’s China through football
-Makes a contribution to international football studies and contemporary China studies
-Highlights the limitations of actor-centred institutionalism and political steering

The findings suggest that anti-corruption campaigns and the emergence of new actors in Chinese football have led to a hierarchisation and centralisation of policy-making processes in this particular policy field.
🚨 New Publication! 🚨 The article examines the institutional changes in Chinese football governance under Xi Jinping. #ChineseFootball #XiJinping #TopLevelDesign
Pleased to share my article: "Political Steering Theory in the Era of 'Top-Level Design': The Unexpected Implications of Campus Football in Xi Jinping's China", highlighting the importance of formally subordinate actors, despite the centralization tendencies of Chinese politics under Xi Jinping.
