I have committed to writing a joke on my office door each week for this academic year. I'll be putting them in this thread for accountability and posterity.

Have a talk coming up in the UA Planetary Sciences department on the subject of q/t inclusion in the academy & STEM. Will be talking about cisheteronormative cultures in academia, queer/transphobia & strategies for inclusion. On campus and on zoom (DM for link)!
Congratulations!!!
Yay, glad to see you here!
Hello, universe! I'm an NHFP Sagan Fellow working at the Carnegie Institution for Science's Earth & Planets Laboratory. I'm also the host of Strange New Worlds: A Science & Star Trek Podcast. You can learn more about me below β¬οΈ
π€£ lolsob I also had an epic fight with my PhD advisor related to this π€¦ it's a bad idea, for sure.
Excited to share the 1st direct evidence of quartz clouds in the atmosphere of a transiting #exoplanet! With #JWST MIRI we found nanoparticles of quartz, SiO2, causing a spike in the planet's spectrum at 8.6 micron unveiling the Oxygen locked in the clouds

hey everyone! this is my first post. just moved from twitter after being away from most social media for a long time. how are y'all?
Dr. KarikΓ³'s story is inspiring, but let us remember: her story describes a failing system. "Focus on what's next" is good advice, but in Germany "next" is on the street after 6 yrs of Postdoc and maybe soon after 4 yrs. She spent almost 30 yrs at Uni. #ichBinHanna www.cnbc.com/2023/10/06/n...
Hello world! I am on BlueSky now.
OMG congrats!!!!!
I feel like Iβm the only person that finds Dr. Karikoβs story extremely depressing and discouraging? Like how many scientists were treated the same way and didnβt get justice/revenge/ vindication via a Nobel Prize?
How long are things going to happen like that ? Cuz nothing has changed.
I am disappointed that the NSF GRFP does not support students in PhD programs who earned masters degrees elsewhere. I suspect that this restriction is especially limiting to BIPOC students and Bridge students.
this is a common thing that happens - and I'm aware of this being used as a threat in astronomy
The take home message is that even if the entire world tells you that you're working on something unimportant and you struggle to get funding or keep a job there's a one in a million chance you'll get a prize with which you could buy a two rooms apartment multiple decades later
MPIA is hiring another APEx fellow! I had a great time there as a fellow and highly recommend applying. Happy to answer any questions about my experience or the department. π
Running GCM simulations for a JWST proposal and they keep crashing over and over again. At this point half of me really wants to get the proposal accepted so it was worth it and the other half wants it to be rejected so that I'll never ever have to deal with this planet again.
The Supreme Court is hearing a case next week about who can enforce the Americans with Disabilities Act
It's been flying under the radar, and I think that's a big mistake

That's a good idea! Though, in practice, I'm not comfortable driving a van in Chicago traffic at the moment. (A sedan, yes, perhaps, but not a van.)
I hate how with moving, there is a compromise in terms of sustainability between not having a car and buying used furniture... clearly, it's more sustainable to not have a car, but it also means I'll have to buy some furniture new bc I don't have as much flexibility w/ picking up used furniture.
Taking a full month off to move from Heidelberg to Chicago 100% was the right call. So far, this move has felt so much more manageable than the last one. That being said, I could easily use another week off to deal with moving stuff. π
