George and Margaret Binns, who established the drapery in 1804, went on to have 15 children! One of them being Henry Binns (pictured here). Henry took over the family business when his father died in 1836. His brother, George Jr, had a different career path ahead...
Today we're looking back at our work on Sunderland's High St. West. Beginning as a small drapery business, people in the NE remember Binns department stores. As well as telling the story of Sunderland's development, the story of the Binns family intertwines with working class politics in the region.
Yesterday, Bev went up the tower at St. Mary's to look at the restoration work, and took some brilliant photos. As well as the stunning view of the Tyne Bridge, we have the inscription from the work done in 1741, and the new gantries! It's so exciting to see the restoration project unfold. π
A Victorian pencil sketch of a man wrapped up in warm clothing being touched on the shoulder by a ghost.
Winter has long been linked with ghosts. C19 NE folklorists also saw late December as haunting season, noting that Co. Durham was on high alert for ghosts from St Thomas' Eve until Christmas Eve, when they returned to the spirit realm. If St Mary's had ghosts, we'd be sure they have stories to tell!
It looks like a another busy shopping weekend on Northumberland Street ahead, why not do get some of your Christmas list sorted online and gift a Trust membership to a heritage-loving loved one? Memberships support the work of the Trust in saving local buildings and sharing them with the public. π
