UK "54% food self-sufficient ... Netherlands [is] 80% ... Spain is at 75% ... The default position that others can feed us is hardwired into the British state system ... The government has no plans to improve the UK’s self-sufficiency..."

"changing tastes in the UK mean mutton, made from mature sheep, is no longer eaten in the same volume it was by previous generations" - have tastes changed? Or is it more the case the food industry rarely affords the opportunity to taste mutton?

In "the early 1990s & the UK and France had similar levels of obesity. But obesity levels in France have remained fairly stable for over three decades while the UK's have soared"

The UK is the only G20 nation to strip citizenship in bulk. Only Kuwait, Bahrain and Nicaragua have stripped more people of citizenship than Britain. These powers must be abolished. Find out more in our report, co-authored with @runnymedetrust.bsky.social
Modern dilemma: if someone's banging on your front door shouting someone else's name, do you open it and risk assault by a group of drunks or not open it and risk it being smashed in by a group of policeman...

FT comments section this morning - saying what everyone else is thinking, right?
Depressing, but not in the least surprising. Welsh Gov doesn't seem to put much effort into explaining it's powers, and reporting by BBC etc too often fails to make clear whether it's a Welsh or UK Gov minister they're quoting

“The more global the system is, the harder it is to guarantee that you’re actually going to have it work, and food security is something which really needs to be as local as possible,”

Robinson's actions make him a security threat to the UK. He's out of the country & can claim Irish citizenship. Why not take advantage of this & remove his British citizenship? Or does UK Gov think he's less of a threat than the British children held in al-Roj?

With Iran's retaliation using up so many drones, will this curtail supplies of Iranian drones to Russia lessening the number of attacks against Ukraine?
Eluned Morgan pledges to "end homelessness in Wales by 2034".
This will seemingly replace their previous 2021 plan to "end homelessness by 2026".
Today, we’re writing to the Prime Minister, calling on the UK Government to abolish citizenship stripping.
Using these extreme powers, the Home Secretary can deprive some British citizens of legal rights simply by saying it is 'conducive to the public good' to do so.

"If MPs were to move to Manchester, York, Leeds or Birmingham for a decade, would that not send a powerful signal to the public?" - why not permanently, with Birmingham's centrality to the transport network making it the obvious choice?

Mandelson’s lawyers: "[his] overriding priority is to cooperate ... and to clear his name". Whether or not he's found guilty of a crime, he'll never clear his name. Ostensibly a public servant, he prioritised his own interests, overlooking Epstein's crimes.

Chart showing Reform voters are far more obsessed with immigration than supporters of far right parties in mainland Europe.
Fascinating. Reform UK voters are way more obsessed with immigration that those who support their populist radical right and extreme right counterparts in continental Europe.

Turns out (says @jburnmurdoch.ft.com) it's not so much an oversupply of graduates in the UK (the same would be true of other similar countries but it's not) as an undersupply of the kind of jobs that a better-performing, more productive economy would supply.
'“It’s getting more dangerous, more uncertain,” a Syrian source said. “Other countries are undertaking these repatriations. Australia has completely abdicated its responsibility.”' - as has the UK Gov with British mums & children in Al-Roj

The impeccsable @rebeccaroache.bsky.social interviewed me on self-control on the @academicimp.bsky.social podcast. It was a huge pleasure to get to rant, unbridled, about my work on self-control, neurodiversity, and how individual differences in self-control are a structural justice problem.
Spoiling a lot of takes but begging a large number of other questions... "Worsening graduate fortunes, it turns out, are a particularly British problem"
