In 1999 Nato bombed a TV studio in Serbia, killing technicians and makeup people. The UK Labour Party said this was OK because a TV station that broadcasts government propaganda was a valid military target. I was working in a TV studio at the time and quit the Labour Party.

Library conferences on BlueSky A list of library and information science conferences, with links to their hashtags on the social media platform BlueSky.

Exciting news - I have actually updated the Library Conferences on BlueSky page, and it now has current and previous 2026 sections! Lots to do to add in events I have noted in screenshots and saved emails, but good progress.

It feels like Gary Neville started trying to demolish the pub soon after it was built

When I used to walk my son to & from school, we used to play various games to diminish the tedium & repetition. One was finding β€˜good’ sticks, we had quite the collectionπŸ˜‚
My son, now 26 still occasionally brings them me. Last week he brought in this β€˜proud horse homunculus’!

This is terrible but I can at least laugh a bit more at the Web 3.0 people who are now in the past despite never managing to actually be in the present

Coin used as Leeds bus fare was 2,000‑year‑old currency The coin was handed down to Peter Edwards from his grandfather in the 1950s.

This is the sort of thing a cashless society robs us of, the opportunity to try to get away with paying the bus fare in Carthaginian currency www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I wonder will this harassment get as much publicity and have the Home Secretary call it disgraceful or is that only for really serious crimes like drawing on statues with chalk?

I lost a customer that way. I had a series of crackly phone spam bots with Indian accents call me up for weeks, then for one I snapped and said something like "Oh god I'm so sick of these bots" and it was, very unfortunately, a nice customer with an Indian accent and a crackly line. Still mortified.

It should be fraud to misrepresent a computer as a person in a business context. This goes for support messages too. If I hear or see "Hi I'm Steve" I expect a human not a jumped-up Python script.

08.03.2026 16:14 πŸ‘ 10 πŸ” 2 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

here's another thing i hate: when companies change their AI computer voice to be more "human". under no circumstances do I want that. i want every computer in my life to sound stilted and weird because it's a computer, not a person, and it is a violation of natural law for it to speak in our voice

"The Underwood Multi-tool (c. 1850)

Decades before the first Swiss Army knife (1891), London’s Underwood of Haymarket crafted this "harped" pocket kit. Designed for Victorian sportsmen, it features a hoof pick, saw, and corkscrew. A rare 19th-century masterpiece of portability."

That's because the designers and programmers are incredibly ignorant of things outside their very narrow field of expertise, and astonishingly overconfident and naive about what they do know.
