Water immersion is the easiest way to achieve this, they are also developing fire extinguishers that provide sufficient cooling effect that the fire will extinguish itself when used. Unfortunately they're quite rare and quite uncommon which given the proliferation of lithium batteries should change
The reason immersion is the main method used to fight lithium ion battery fires is because when a lithium battery burns, it makes it's own oxygen. Any firefighting method that relies on smothering is ineffective in this case, cooling below combustion temperature is pretty much it.
Water immersion is the only currently accepted viable means to fight lithium ion battery fires.
Elemental lithium does explode in water but wouldn't the lithium in batteries be in the form of compounds and therefore have different properties? Just as sodium explodes in water but salt doesn't?
