I listened to it on repeat walking back and forth to my university in Ireland, through the rain, often drunk, and it wormed its way into my soul

"I don't like overtly religious candidates" is an opinion; "the First Amendment means candidates aren't supposed to talk like that" is a falsifiable argument that is very much a history and legal question

The idea that all of this death and destruction is going to apply only to other people in perpetuity, and will never, ever blow back on Americans, is carrying a lot of weight that it can't support forever

There's nothing more fun than being lectured about stuff you're literally a world expert on by people who know nothing: the experience of being on the internet in 2026

The first season of Past Lives is winding down and the second starts next week! This one is all about Bodily Experiences - people from the past we know through their physical remains, like skeletons. We're going to meet Mesolithic shamans, Scythian princesses, and soldiers dropped in mass graves.

Sites where DNA testing is standard have shown us just how flawed all of those assumptions are, and it turns out plenty of women were buried with weapons, gracile skeletons had Y chromosomes, and so on.

Yeah! It's a fascinating topic, and particularly when we're looking back at reports from older sites, the excavators sexed skeletons based on their expectations of grave goods - weapons were automatically male, for example, or jewelry was female. Sometimes diagnostic bones don't preserve well.

THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

I can't tell you how many analyses of human remains I've read that boil down to "how were these people up and doing stuff with rotting teeth, the full range of systemic stress markers, stunted growth, parasites, endemic diseases, and high rates of violence"

Just because people weren't obese didn't mean that they were healthy - it's not better to be 5'5 and 120 pounds with terrible oral health and intestinal parasites when you enter boot camp than 5'9 and 200 pounds needing to drop some weight.
