Not to be pedantic, but if a blizzard dumps 3+ feet of snow in 24 hrs it could (depending on the structure) cave in a roof. An avoidable outcome w diligence & effort, but the potential for loss is no longer in the "never gonna" happen category.

I say don't make the alt button smaller. Moving it to the right side is no big deal, but you can barely see this new version. Its a super duper way of disparaging & dismissing folks who rely on it. If your goal is to make it non-functional, you're blazingly close.
He could have written the following & made it crystal, but he didn't. His lyrics sometime deal in the bleak & cruel, but never the gory & viscous.
I set the timer and thought of you

The "grey is really red" bit has always bothered me. Equating red with blood would support you're interpretation. But I think it's more that red = anger. Again, it was chosen because it fits the rhyme.
re: "put the lens up to my head"
Yes, it's an odd phrase, but using the word lens to mean gun isn't likely. (Eye is more likely.) Perhaps he sets the timer & takes a pic of his head. (His mouth screaming, his furious/bleak eyes glaring.) I'm gonna go with 'it fits the rhyme."

Hemingway is complicated. I prefer his short stories, which tend to blend sumptuous description w subtext heavy dialog. (I have a book you can borrow.) He is a man of your grandfather's generation, a writer for CIS white men. 70+ years on, his stoic/toxic masculinity is difficult to appreciate.
